March 08, 2024 | Swimming & Diving
LOS ANGELESย โ The UCLA diving team is set to compete at the 2024 NCAA Zone E Diving Championships in Flagstaff, Arizona. The three-day meet will run from March 11 to 13 at the Wall Aquatic Center on the campus of Northern Arizona University.
The Bruins' five competing divers include sophomore Eden Cheng, freshman Laura Fisher, freshman Lauren Hallaselka, junior Zoe Jespersgaard, and graduate transfer Savana Trueb.
UCLA will have three representatives in the 1-meter championship, with Jespersgaard, Hallaselka, and Trueb participating in the competition. As for the 3-meter competition, the Bruins will have four athletes taking part, with Cheng joining Jespersgaard, Hallaselka, and Trueb in the event. To conclude the meet the Bruins will have three representatives in the platform competition, with Cheng, Trueb, and first-time zones participant Fisher set to compete.
Results at Zone Championships determine qualification for the NCAA Championships. UCLA has already qualified three swimmers for NCAAs, and will look to add to that tally on the dive side based on this week's finishes.
This year's Zone E Championships begin with 1-meter on Monday, followed by the 3-meter on Tuesday, and platform on Wednesday. Prelims begin at 11:30 a.m. PT each day.
Cheng heads into the week fresh off a school-record performance in the platform competition. She set a UCLA school record in prelims at the Pac-12 Championships with a score of 352.50. At last years zones, Cheng triple-qualified for NCAAs and became the first Bruin to do so since Eloise Belanger in 2019.
Jespersgaard has qualified for zones twice before in both the 1-meter and 3-meter. She narrowly missed qualifying for both the 1-meter and 3-meter in 2023 where she finished ninth in the 1M and 10th in the 3M competition. Jespersgaard recently finished sixth at the Pac-12 championships in the 3-meter competition.
Trueb has qualified for NCAAs three times in the past, and will look to make it a fourth time in Flagstaff. The graduate student, who qualified for finals in all three disciplines at the Pac-12 Championships, has already triple-qualified once before in her collegiate career, back in 2022 while representing Rutgers.
Fisher and Hallaselka are set to compete in their first NCAA Zones meet. Hallaselka took fifth place at Pac-12's in the 3-meter platform while Fisher finished 12th in the platform competition. ย
