Dodson’s Career Performance Leads Bruins Past Panthers

FORT WORTH, Texas – Graduate middle blocker Anna Dodson exploded for a career-high 20.5 points to lead UCLA to the straight-set victory over Prairie View A&M in the opening game of the 'Fight at the Fort' on Thursday morning inside Schollmaier Arena.
The Bruins (4-1) received a massive performance from their three-time All-Pac-12 honoree who put down a match-high 14 kills at a staggering .545 hitting percentage. Dodson was a force on the defensive side of the ball and finished just one block shy of her second career double-double, registering nine in the contest.
Set scores were 25-18, 25-18, 25-11.
UCLA hit .345 as a team in another incredibly efficient attacking display from Alfee Reft's team. Graduate setter Audrey Pak provided 32 assists to support the Bruins' prolific offense, marking her fourth match with 30 or more. The defense was equally dominant, limiting the Panthers to a negative hitting percentage (-.012).
Graduate libero Kate Reilly made her inaugural start for UCLA, achieving an impressive stat line with 15 digs and one assist.
Dodson set the tone by connecting on four consecutive swings to create separation for UCLA in the opening set. Junior outside hitter Cheridyn Leverette – who finished in double figures for the fifth straight match – recorded three kills in the set to help pace the attack. Leverette racked up 12 kills and five digs in a solid showing from the Hampton, Ga. native. The Bruins hit .394 in the opening frame to cruise to the 25-18 win.
Prairie View A&M regrouped and commenced the second set with a strong surge, spearheaded by Kylee Owens, who recorded a team-high six kills. UCLA struggled with efficiency throughout much of the second frame; however, Dodson restored momentum with three consecutive kills following a timeout called by Reft. UCLA then executed a 5-0 run, during which Leverette and Dodson each contributed two kills. Freshman outside hitter Kiki Horne concluded another 5-0 run with a decisive kill, securing yet another set victory for the Bruins.
In the final set, UCLA's standout middle blocker excelled defensively, recording five consecutive blocks to establish a 6-1 lead. Dodson compiled eight blocks of her nine total blocks in the third set. Leverette achieved double-digits with two additional kills, while Horne contributed another, prompting a timeout from Prairie View A&M. Graduate outside hitter Joy Umeh also made a significant impact, tallying four kills and four blocks in the third frame. The Bruins posted a hitting percentage of .409 in the last set, securing a decisive 25-11 victory, their largest margin of the season.
