Bruins’ Win Streak Snapped by No. 25 TCU

September 13, 2024 | Women's Volleyball

FORT WORTH, Texas – Junior outside hitter Cheridyn Leverette earned the second double-double of her career in a four-set defeat to No. 25 TCU on Friday night inside Schollmaier Arena.

Set scores were 19-25, 25-23, 26-28, and 21-25.

The Bruins (5-2) see their three-game win streak come to an end in the final game of the Fight at the Fort. TCU received a massive performance from the reigning AVCA National Player of the Week, Melanie Parra, who racked up 33 kills at a .373 clip.

Leverette made it six straight games with double-digit kills, collecting 15 on the night while tallying 13 digs defensively.

Junior outside hitter Grayce Olson enjoyed her best game of the young season with 14 kills at a hitting percentage of .333. Also finishing in double figures was freshman outside hitter Kiki Horne, posting 12 kills in the contest.

UCLA entered the final match of the weekend with a streak of nine consecutive set victories. However, the nationally-ranked Horned Frogs ended this streak in the opening frame, achieving a hitting percentage of .324 to secure an early lead. Despite an initial setback, the Bruins narrowed the gap to one point following an ace by junior defensive specialist Katie McCarthy. Nevertheless, two separate 4-0 scoring runs by TCU ultimately proved too much to overcome in the first set, despite Leverette's five kills.

The second set was highlighted by freshman setter Kate Duffey's involvement. The Ventura, Calif. native subbed into the match and facilitated a UCLA attack that hit .265 in the second set, improving from the .143 mark in the first. Duffey registered 27 assists despite only featuring in two of the four sets.

Olson had the hot hand when she sparked a 3-0 run by herself, putting down three consecutive kills. The junior finished with five kills in the set to lead the Bruins to victory, evening the match at a set apiece.

The third set emerged as one of the most dramatic of the season, with both teams exchanging set points in a tightly contested frame. Neither team managed to secure an advantage of more than three points throughout the back-and-forth exchanges. Leverette and Horne traded kills until UCLA established a two-point lead at 23-21. However, TCU rallied in the closing stages, winning three consecutive points to reach set point. The Bruins managed to stave off defeat and extended the set when Horne's initial attack error was overturned following a video review. Ultimately, the hosts' offensive prowess, reflected in a team hitting percentage of .400, secured the set with a 28-26 victory.

The final set continued the pattern of intense, high-level volleyball until a late surge from TCU clinched the victory for the hosts. TCU achieved a hitting percentage of .367 in the final set, while UCLA was hampered by six attack errors and three service errors.

UCLA will return to California to play its first match in the Golden State when it heads to UC Davis on Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. (PT). The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
