No. 4 Softball Stomps Weber State, Falls in Extra Innings to Arizona

March 01, 2025 | Softball

FULLERTON, Calif. – The No. 4 UCLA softball team split on the final day at the Judi Garman Classic on Saturday with a 26-5 mercy-rule victory over Weber State and 9-8 loss to No. 12 Arizona in 10 innings.

The Bruins (18-4) scored the second-most runs in a single game in program history in their morning matchup with the Weber State Wildcats (5-14), falling one run shy of UCLA's 27 run mark set in 2008 against Santa Clara. Freshman catcher Sofia Mujica also made history with eight runs batted in to tie the program single-game record which was originally set by Amanda Kamekona in the same Santa Clara game. Mujica recorded the first two-homer game of her career, blasting a grand slam and three-run homer.

The Bruins and Arizona Wildcats (20-2) put on a thriller in front of a sold-out crowd at Anderson Family Field. The two rivals went into extra innings for the 13th time in the series' 167-game history. After four ties and three lead changes, Arizona – the designated home team – drove in the walk-off run on a sacrifice fly to left field. UCLA left fielder Rylee Slimp's throw home was just late as Arizona baserunner Emma Kavanaugh slid under catcher Maggie Daniel's tag.

UCLA homered twice to take the lead against Arizona in the top of the seventh and 10th. Junior Megan Grant accounted for the first homer with a three-run shot to give UCLA a 5-2 advantage. The latter was a two-run blast by freshman Kaniya Bragg after a runner was placed on second to lead off the 10th.

Arizona answered Grant's seven-inning blast with three runs on three hits in the bottom half. Tayler Biehl opened the bottom half with a double to right field. A walk and infield single loaded the bases for Sydney Stewart who singled in a pair to trim the lead to 5-4. A sacrifice fly by Wildcats pitcher Devyn Netz knotted the score at 5-5.

Netz pitched the entirety of the game for Arizona and earned her eighth win of the year. Netz finished her 10.0-inning outing with 163 total pitches. Sophomore Kaitlyn Terry pitched from the second inning onwards for UCLA after starter Taylor Tinsley surrendered two runs in the first.

Terry limited Arizona's bats up until that seventh inning. She escaped a major jam in the bottom of the third after opening the frame with a pair of base hits up the middle. A flyout by Stewart to right allowed both runners to advance into scoring position. Terry went on to strikeout Netz and Arizona's leader in batting average Paige Dimler.

The Wildcats matched Bragg's two-run homer in the 10th with one of their own from Emily Schepp.

In addition to Mujica, several other Bruins had spectacular offensive performances in game one versus Weber State. Both Woolery and Grant recorded five RBI apiece and went a perfect 3-for-3 and 2-for-2, respectively. Savannah Pola was a team-best 4-for-4 at the plate with a career-high four runs scored. Slimp finished 3-for-3 with four runs scored as well. In total, eight UCLA players recorded multiple hits.

Also of note, Kate Blunt recorded her first two career hits and RBI in her first-ever plate appearances.

UCLA scored in all four innings it went to the plate with tallies of five, six, nine and six runs. The Bruins hit around the order twice in the third and fourth innings, marking the second straight day accomplishing that feat after defeating Utah 16-4 on Friday.
