Pola Leads UCLA to Run-Rule Win Behind 3-for-3 Night

March 11, 2025 | Softball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The No. 6-ranked UCLA softball team recorded its 15th mercy-rule victory of the year with a 9-0 decision over San Diego in five innings at Easton Stadium Tuesday evening.
ย
Senior Savannah Pola led the Bruins' (24-4) offense with her fourth three-hit performance of the season, finishing the night 3-for-3 with two doubles and four runs batted in. Pola leads the team with a .462 batting average and 11 doubles and ranks second with 33 runs scored through 28 games.
ย
"With finals week coming up, it was really good and exciting that we were able to lock on and have a lot of energy even though it's a Tuesday night at 7 p.m.," Pola said postgame. "I'm really proud of us for keeping the energy up and coming out with a punch."
ย
UCLA totaled eight hits and drew three walks in tonight's game.
ย
The Toreros (11-16) were limited to just one hit, but received five passes โ€“ four walks and one hit-by-pitch โ€“ against the Bruins' arms of Kaitlyn Terry and Addisen Fisher. Terry started the game and struck out four of the 13 batters she faced en route to picking up her team-best 10th win of the year.
ย
UCLA hit around the batting order and did the bulk of its scoring in the first inning with eight runs off six hits, three walks and one error. Graduate Jessica Clements led off the bottom half with a hot shot that ricocheted off San Diego's third baseman. The first of Pola's two doubles of the inning landed inside the left field foul line to put two in scoring position. The next batter, junior Jordan Woolery, cashed in on the opportunity with a two-RBI single into center field.
ย
Woolery, who entered the week ranking third in the country in RBIs, improved her season total to 45.
ย
Back-to-back singles by freshmen Kaniya Bragg and Rylee Slimp loaded the bases to continue the first-inning rally. With two outs, the Bruins drew three consecutive bases-loaded, full-count walks on 22 pitches to bring home three runs and stretch the lead to 5-0. Jayla Castro, Kaitlyn Terry and Clements were the keen-eyed batters.
ย
Pola followed the walk-athon with her second two-bagger of the inning, this time clearing the bases for three RBIs to give UCLA an 8-0 cushion. Pola's hit into the left-center gap was mismanaged by San Diego's center fielder, allowing her to move up to third base.
ย
Pola drove in UCLA's final run of the night in the bottom of the third on a single lasered past the outstretched glove of San Diego's diving shortstop. Castro, starting her third game of the season at catcher, scored from second base on the play, tumbling across home plate.
ย
Fisher closed the ballgame with 2.0 scoreless innings in relief. She struck out two batters and allowed only two Toreros to reach via base on balls.
