Tinsley’s Solid Start Leads UCLA to First Big Ten Win

March 14, 2025 | Softball

LOS ANGELES – The No. 6-ranked UCLA softball team shut out Purdue, 6-0, Friday night at Easton Stadium for its first-ever Big Ten Conference win. The Bruins (25-4, 1-0 Big Ten) honored UCLA Athletic Hall of Famer Janice Parks prior to first pitch by retiring her No. 14 jersey – the seventh retired jersey in program history.

Junior right-handed pitcher Taylor Tinsley recorded 10 strikeouts over five scoreless innings en route to picking up her fifth win of the season. The performance marked Tinsley's sixth career double-digit strikeout game.

Tinsley faced the minimum in all but one of her five innings on the night. She struck out the same side twice in the second and fifth inning. The three Boilermaker (15-10, 0-1 Big Ten) batters Tinsley sent packing to the dugout twice were Delaney Reefe, Sage Scarmardo and Jordyn Ramos. In total, Tinsley retired 14 of the 16 batters she faced, allowing just two hits.

Tinsley has not allowed a run in each of her last two starts, dropping her earned run average to 2.30 on the season.

UCLA totaled five hits in the ballgame. Senior utility Savannah Pola was the only Bruin in the lineup to record multiple base hits, finishing 2-for-3 with a double. Pola improved her team-leading batting average to .468 (44-for-94) doubles total to 12.

After being held scoreless through the first two innings, UCLA broke through on Purdue starting pitcher Madi Elish in the third by scoring three runs off two hits, two errors and a walk. Graduate center fielder Jessica Clements led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error by first base. Pola moved Clements into scoring position on a bunt single, bringing up the heart of the Bruins' order – No. 3 hitter Jordan Woolery and No. 4 hitter Megan Grant. Woolery doubled down the left field line to score Clements for the game's first run.

Grant followed Woolery with a four-pitch walk to load the bases for freshman Kaniya Bragg. The Garden Grove, Calif. native pushed across the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly into center field. Purdue center fielder Jordyn Ramos' throw home bounced off Bragg's bat, allowing UCLA's runners to advance into scoring position. Freshman Rylee Slimp followed Bragg with another sacrifice to right field to score pinch runner Lauren Hatch tagging up from third base.

Bragg put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run homer over the left field scoreboard to double the lead, 6-0. Woolery walked and Grant singled into left field to set up Bragg's fourth home run of the year.

Freshman Addisen Fisher took over in the circle for Tinsley in the last two innings. Fisher allowed two of the first three batters in the seventh to reach base, but shut the door on any hopes of a Purdue comeback with a strikeout and groundout to shortstop. She finished her relief outing with two strikeouts.
