Terry’s Dominant Outing Secures Series Win Over Purdue

March 15, 2025 | Softball

LOS ANGELES – Left-handed starting pitcher Kaitlyn Terry allowed just two hits and struck out six over 6.0 innings to lead the No. 6-ranked UCLA softball team to a 2-1 victory over Purdue at Easton Stadium Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Bruins (26-4, 2-0 Big Ten) clinch the series versus the Boilermakers (15-11, 0-2 Big Ten) and push their winning streak to seven games. There were just 11 baserunners (five hits, four walks and two errors) between the two squads in the one hour-and 38 minute-long ballgame.

UCLA's offense totaled seven baserunners off three base hits and four walks. Only the Bruins' top third of the lineup tallied a base knock.

Terry, making her ninth start in the circle this season, allowed Purdue's only run to the third batter of the game on a solo homer to designated player Kyndall Bailey. Purdue's next and only other hit of the night came on a two-out single in the sixth inning, again off the bat of Bailey. Terry improved her record to 11-3 and dropped her earned run average down to 1.35.

Purdue's homer marked the first run scored against UCLA in 25 innings, snapping a streak that dated back to the fourth inning versus Sacramento State on March 8.

Junior third baseman Jordan Woolery hit a go-ahead solo homer off the top of the right-center field batting cages in the third inning to give UCLA a 2-1 lead that it held onto for the remainder of the game. Woolery leads the team with 13 home runs and a 1.000 slugging percentage.

The Bruins' other two hits in the game came in their first two at-bats of the first inning. Graduate Jessica Clements and senior Savannah Pola led off the game with back-to-back singles to center field. A walk to Woolery loaded the bases with no outs for first baseman Megan Grant. Grant rolled over a ball to first base which was thrown home for the force out. Freshman shortstop Kaniya Bragg knocked in the game-tying run with another fielder's choice on a groundball to third base, giving Pola enough time to sprint home safely. Woolery was tagged out between second and third on the play.

Terry retired 10 consecutive batters from the end of the first through the end of the fourth. She struck out two batters in the second inning and needed just six pitches to take care of Purdue's No. 2, 3 and 4 hitters in the fourth inning.

Terry ran into trouble in fifth inning after two of the first three Boilermakers she faced reached on errors by the infield. Terry's defense was able to make up for their miscues later in the inning. Pola, playing right field, tracked down a deep fly ball with a running catch towards the foul pole to prevent a runner from scoring from second base. Bragg, who committed the first error of the inning on a throw deep from the 5-6 hole, made amends with groundout.

More defensive prowess was on display in the sixth. Freshman left fielder Rylee Slimp ran in on a shallow fly ball to make a diving catch to end the inning.

Junior right-hander Taylor Tinsley took over duties in the circle in the seventh inning and needed just 10 pitches to close out the contest for her second save of the season. Tinsley induced two pop ups to Grant at first base and struck out the final batter of the game looking on three pitches.
