Home Run Barrage Steers UCLA to Series Sweep of Purdue
March 16, 2025 | Softball
LOS ANGELES – The No. 6-ranked UCLA softball team overcame a four-run deficit to defeat Purdue, 7-5, and secure a sweep in its Big Ten Conference opening series at Easton Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Bruins (27-4, 3-0 Big Ten) used three home runs by juniors Megan Grant and Jordan Woolery and senior Savannah Pola to tie up the game and take the lead versus the Boilermakers (15-12, 0-3 Big Ten). It marked UCLA's seventh game this year with three or more home runs, improving the total season tally to 49.
"None of it starts without Jordan right in front of me. She was definitely the spark of our offense in terms of getting us back," said Grant when asked about her own homer. "Her swing was everything we needed so I just fed off her and the team.
"I would like to call (our series versus Purdue) refreshing, honestly. As a team, we've been waiting for this moment to switch conferences and be ready from the jump."
Left-hander Kaitlyn Terry earned her 12th win of the season and finished the game with 5.1 innings of work after entering for relief in the second inning. The Glendale, Ariz. native retired the final 12 batters of the ballgame with six of those outs being via strikeout.
Woolery worked one of the Bruins' seven walks on the day to set the stage for Grant in the bottom of the fourth with UCLA trailing by two, 5-3. Grant took a pitch down the heart of the plate and rocketed the ball into right field for an estimated 273 feet, per statcast, to knot up the game at five runs apiece.
Pola put the Bruins out in front, 6-5, the next half inning on a solo shot that carried eeked over the right field fence for her fourth homer of the year. UCLA added one more run in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a two-out double by freshman Rylee Slimp which kept the inning alive. Slimp came around to score on a wayward throw by Purdue shortstop Ashlynn Campbell after a groundball was hit to her by catcher Sofia Mujica.
UCLA surrendered all five of Purdue's runs in the first three innings. Freshman right-hander Addisen Fisher started in the circle and gave up three earned runs off four hits and one walk. The Boilermakers' leadoff hitter Khloe Banks opened the game with a triple that bounced off graduate Jessica Clements' glove in center field. A sacrifice fly to left field by Kyndall Bailey, who recorded Purdue's only two hits in yesterday's ballgame, plated the first run on Sunday.
The Bruins answered in the bottom half of the first with a run of their own. Clements led off with a bunt single and was moved over to third on a single up the middle by Woolery and walk Grant. Kaniya Bragg's 11th hit-by-pitch of the season pushed Clements across to the game, 1-1.
Fisher was one out away from escaping a bases-loaded jam in the second inning before Big Ten batting average leader Moriah Polar scored two more on a single into left field. Purdue tacked on two more in the third inning off Terry who entered the circle from right field for relief. Terry surrendered RBI singles to Alivia Meeks and Banks. Meeks attempted to score from second base on Banks' single into left, but was tagged at home by Mujica on the throw by Slimp.
The Bruins began chipping away at the 5-1 lead in the bottom of the third when Woolery mashed relief pitcher Julia Gosset's first pitch of the game to center field. Woolery's homer was her second in as many games and her team-leading 14th of the season.
Woolery finished the ballgame 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in addition to her solo blast.
Four of the Bruins' next six batters – Bragg, Slimp, Jayla Castro and Terry – reached base via walk against Gossett to push another run across, trimming the lead to 5-3.
