March 23, 2025 | Softball
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 6-ranked UCLA softball team dropped a Big Ten Conference contest to Iowa, 7-4, at Bob Pearl Softball Field on Sunday afternoon.
The loss snaps the Bruins' (28-5, 4-1 Big Ten) 10-game winning streak. UCLA left 11 total runners on base, including 10 across the third through sixth innings, and logged six base hits in the ballgame. Freshman Rylee Slimp was the only Bruin to record multiple hits, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in.
The Hawkeyes (19-9, 3-1 Big Ten) used a five-run fifth inning to rally past UCLA and take a 7-4 lead. Sophomore shortstop Soo-Jin Berry used today's 30-plus-mile-per-hour winds to record her first career multi-homer game. Berry's first blast in the third inning to dead center gave Iowa its first lead of the day at 2-1. Her second two-run shot in the fifth padded the Hawkeyes' lead to the game's final tally of 7-4.
UCLA regained the lead in the top of the fifth with three runs off two hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Graduate center fielder Jessica Clements singled to right field to lead off the frame. Walks to senior second baseman Savannah Pola and junior first baseman Megan Grant loaded the bases with one out for Kaniya Bragg. The freshman from Garden Grove, Calif. was drilled for the second time in back-to-back games, pushing across the game-tying run at 2-2. Slimp followed her classmate with a two-RBI single to center to give Bruins' starting pitcher Kaitlyn Terry a two-run cushion.
Terry finished her 5.0-inning outing with eight strikeouts, seven hits, one walk and two earned runs. She was able to work around damage, exiting each inning with at least one runner in scoring position.
Junior right-hander Taylor Tinsley entered the circle for relief at the beginning of the sixth inning with the two-run buffer. She walked the first two batters she faced and allowed a single to load the bases with one out. Iowa center fielder Tory Bennett emptied the pillows with a bases-clearing double down the left field line to give the Hawkeyes a 5-4 lead. Tinsley's five runs allowed snapped an 18 scoreless-inning streak.
