No. 7 Softball Tops Terrapins, 9-0, in Five Innings
March 28, 2025 | Softball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. โ The No. 7-ranked UCLA softball team shut out Maryland, 9-0, in five innings to take game one of a Big Ten Conference series at UMD Softball Complex Friday evening.
ย
The Bruins (30-5, 5-1 Big Ten) secured their 18th mercy-rule victory and 12th shutout of the year with tonight's result. Junior first baseman Megan Grant led UCLA's offensive onslaught behind a 2-for-3 performance with a home run, double and career-high-tying six runs batted in.
ย
As a team, the Bruins totaled seven hits, a season-high nine walks and avoided recording a strikeout at the plate, marking the fifth time this season they've accomplished that feat. Savannah Pola scored a pair of runs while driving in one in her 1-for-3 day.
ย
Sophomore starting pitcher Kaitlyn Terry tallied her third complete-game shutout of the season and allowed just five Terrapins (15-16, 3-5 Big Ten) to reach base via three hits and two base-on-balls. Terry now sports a team-best 13-3 record, 1.44 earned run average and 104 strikeouts over 87.2 innings pitched this season.
ย
Terry benefited from stellar defensive play, particularly from Pola at second base. In the second inning, Pola smothered a hard-hit ball and initiated a 4-6-3 double play after Terry led off the frame with a walk. Pola made another highlight-reel play in the bottom of the fourth. A one-out single from Maryland's No. 3 hitter Sydney Lewis and a subsequent groundout put a runner on second base. On the next play, Pola made a diving stop behind second base and throw home to prevent the ball from going into the outfield and the runner from advancing past third base.
ย
UCLA used two free passes and a single into center field by freshman Ryle Slimp to lead off the top of the second and prime itself for its first scoring opportunity. A fielder's choice hit by freshman catcher Sofia Mujica to shortstop plated the Bruins' only run of the inning, advancing Kaniya Bragg home. Jessica Clements hit a laser that tipped off the glove of Maryland's third baseman which was caught by the shortstop who then doubled off the Bruins' baserunner with a throw over to second base to end the inning.
ย
UCLA's bats broke through in the top of the fourth inning with five runs off four hits and three walks. Freshman Maggie Daniel sparked the rally with a lead-off, pinch-hit double off the right-center field wall. A walk to Mujica and bunt single by Terry loaded the bases for Clements who drove in pinch runner Liesl Osteen with a sacrifice fly to center field, extending the lead to 2-0. Pola followed with a single into right field to score Mujica from second base. One out later, Grant emptied the bases with a three-run homer over the right-center wall to double UCLA's lead to 6-0.
ย
The blast marked Grant's 14th home run of the year, which trails only Jordan Woolery for the team lead. Grant drove in UCLA's next three runs one inning later on a bases-clearing double, improving her RBI total to six on the day. Grant last recorded six RBI in a game last season at CSUN on April 30. She now has 45 RBI on the season and is slugging .951, both marks second to only Woolery.
