No. 7 Softball Wins Twice, Scores 28 Runs on Opening Day
February 06, 2026 | Softball
LOS ANGELES – The No. 7-ranked UCLA softball team won two games in mercy-rule fashion in front of a crowd of 1,156 fans on Opening Day at Easton Stadium Friday, defeating UC Santa Barbara, 18-1, and Northern Colorado, 10-1, both in five innings.
The Bruins (2-0) totaled 28 runs, 22 hits and seven home runs in their first taste of competition in 2026. Infielder Jordan Woolery opened her senior campaign going 6-for-7 with nine RBIs and two home runs, including a grand slam. Two-sport star Megan Grant reached base in six of her seven plate appearances while hitting the 50th home run of her career. She became the 10th Bruin all-time to reach that milestone.
Sophomores Rylee Slimp and Sofia Mujica both hit home runs on Opening Day for a second straight season. Slimp homered on UCLA's first plate appearance of the year and tripled in her very next at-bat. She finished the day 3-for-5 with a team-high five runs scored while batting in the leadoff spot.
Mujica, who played only in game two versus Northern Colorado, homered in each of her first two at-bats of the season for the second multi-HR performance of her career.
Game 1: UCLA 18, UC Santa Barbara 1 (5 inn.)
The Bruins scored in all four innings against the Gauchos (0-2). Slimp hit the first of UCLA's blasts with a lead-off home run in the team's very first at-bat of the season.
UCLA scored eight more runs in the bottom of the second with a two-out rally thanks to four hits and four walks. Slimp drove in two more with a triple over the head of UC Santa Barbara's leaping left fielder. After an RBI single by Woolery, sophomore Kaniya Bragg cleared the bases with a three-run homer to center field to stretch the lead to 7-0. Ramirez doubled in a run with a liner into the left-center gap and later came around to score a wild pitch to close the second with a 9-0 UCLA lead.
Woolery, Bragg, Ramirez and freshman Bri Alejandre each recorded an RBI single as part of a seven-run third inning which ballooned the lead to 16-0.
Woolery capped the slugfest with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth for her first longball of the year.
Senior right-hander Taylor Tinsley drew the Opening Day start and pitched a complete-game with six strikeouts for her 40th career win. Defensively, UCLA's standout play came in a 5-4-3 double play around the horn to erase a leadoff baserunner.
Game 2: UCLA 10, Northern Colorado 1 (5 inn.)
Freshman southpaw Natalie Cable tossed a complete-game with eight strikeouts to earn her first collegiate win over the Bears (1-1). After walking her first batter of the game, Cable did not allow a base-on-balls for the remainder of her outing and surrendered only three hits.
UCLA scored its first four runs via the longball with a pair of blasts from Mujica and one from Grant. Mujica's second blast flew through the trees over the left field videoboard, sparking a seven-run fourth inning. A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Slimp and RBI single into right field by Grant scored two runs, boosting the Bruins' lead 6-1, and brought Woolery to the plate with the bases loaded. On a 2-1 count, Woolery emptied the pillows for the third grand slam of her career.
Cable closed the game by striking out the side in the top of the fifth on 14 pitches.
