Wine Wins on Day Two of A3, Four More Second-Place Finishes

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. - Junior Allison Wine won the 100 Breaststroke on day two of the A3 Performance Invitational at East Los Angeles College, while the Bruins also had four more second-place finishes.
In the evening session, the Bruins had three-straight second-place showings in the 200 Medley Relay, 400 Individual Medley (junior Arlyn Upshaw) and 100 Butterfly (freshman Katie Grover), adding a runner-up posting in the final race of the night, the 800 Freestyle Relay.
400 Individual MedleyUpshaw reached the A final with the third-quickest time in the morning preliminaries at 4:24.63. Junior Shannon Cheung made the D race with a 4:35.85 (27th) in the prelims.
Upshaw improved to second in the final, shaving more than four seconds off her prelim time with a 4:20.37. Cheung was second in the D race (26th overall) with a time of 4:33.08, nearly three seconds off her morning pace.
100 ButterflyThree Bruins made the A final, while all eight swimmers qualifying for the evening session. Grover posted the second-best time at 53.50, which was an NCAA 'B' qualifying mark. Fellow freshman Anna Quinn was fourth (54.76), while junior Madison Applegate placed eighth (55.36).
Sophomore Linnea Mack was ninth in the morning (55.46) to reach the B final, along with freshman Marie-Pierre Delisle (14th, 56.38). A trio qualified for the D race, freshman Maddy Burnham (26th, 57.15), sophomore Hayden Walker (27th, 57.19) and sophomore Emily Hammond (32nd, 57.37).
Grover gave the Bruins their second-straight, second-place finish in an individual race and their third overall with a 53.69. Quinn was sixth in the A final with a 54.85, while Applegate was seventh (54.89).
Mack won the B race with a 54.59, nearly a second better than her morning swim, with Delisle finishing fifth in the same race (13th overall) with a time of 56.10. Burnham placed 26th overall (57.28), while Hammond was 31st (57.67).
200 FreestyleSeven Bruins qualified for the evening session, led by junior Katy Campbell, who was fifth with a 1:50.10. Making the B race were freshman Carly Reid (10th, 1:51.11) and Quinn (11th, 1:51.14). Senior Ally Loper (19th, 1:52.22) reached the C final, while freshman Natalie Amberg (25th, 1:52.74), Walker (29th, 1:52.97) and sophomore Michaela Merlihan (31st, 1:53.26) advanced to the D race.
Campbell maintained her fifth position in the A final with a 1:49.31. Reid won the B race with a 1:50.44, while Quinn was fourth in the same event (12th overall) at 1:51.26. Loper was triumphant in the C race at 1:49.60, nearly three seconds faster than her morning time. Merlihan then claimed the D race with a 1:50.71, 2.55 faster than her morning swim. Amberg was 28th overall (1:52.26), while Walker was 30th (1:53.02).
100 BreaststrokeAll five swimmers who took part in the preliminaries qualified for the evening finals, led by Wine, who had the third-swiftest mark at 1:03.09. Senior Jessica Khojasteh was 11th (1:04.25) to make the B race, while sophomores Brigitte Winkler (18th, 1:04.95) and Maggie Burton (21st, 1:05.14) and senior Taylor Carlson (22nd, 1:05.21) advanced to the C event.
Wine was the first Bruin to win an event this weekend, swimming a 1:01.14 in the final, nearly two seconds faster than her morning swim. It was an NCAA 'B' qualifying time. Khojasteh won the B race with a 1:03.05. In the C event, Winkler was third (19th overall, 1:04.60), followed by Carlson (20th, 1:04.74) and Burton (23rd, 1:06.24).
100 BackstrokeA pair of Bruin sophomores, who also own the top two times in UCLA history in the 100 Back, finished 3-4 in the prelims, as Mack went 54.61, just ahead of Madison White (55.07). Delisle reached the B final with the 16th-best time in the morning (57.13). Qualifying for the C final were Amberg (19th, 57.78) and Grover (21st, 57.91), while senior Courtney Wilde (27th, 58.71) and sophomore Nina Hayes (29th, 58.93) made the D race.
Mack skipped the final and White took her third position with a 53.85, improving on her NCAA 'B' time. Delisle was fourth in the B race (12th overall) with a 56.99. In the C race, Amberg was third (19th overall) at 57.97, while in the D race, Wilde was 29th overall (58.93) and Hayes 30th (59.28).
200 Medley Relay
In the opening race of the evening session, the Bruins posted their first second-place finish of the night. The quartet of junior Katie Kinnear, Wine, Grover and Mack posted a time of 1:41.01. The UCLA B team of White, Carlson, senior Noelle Tarazona and freshman Sarah Kaunitz just finished off the A squad's pace with a 1:41.93.
800 Freestyle Relay
The Bruins ended the evening session as they began it, with a second-place finish in a relay. Senior Monica Dornick, Campbell, Reid and Loper swam a time of 7:21.66.
Competition concludes on Saturday with the 200 Back, 1650 Free, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Fly and 400 Free Relay.
