Dunphy Shines in 2-1 Double Overtime Victory
October 13, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Freshman forward Sunny Dunphy scored her first career goal in the 102nd minute to lead No. 14 UCLA to a 2-1 double overtime victory at Arizona.
Sophomore defender Hailie Mace made the magic happen with a tremendous run from midfield. Mace weaved her way through the Wildcat defense all the way to the six before sending the ball across to Dunphy, who tapped it in at 101:14 to end the game.
The victory was UCLA's sixth in six road games this season, as well as UCLA's 12th consecutive against Arizona (6-7-1, 1-5-0 in the Pac-12).
The Bruins (10-3-1, 4-1-1) got on the board early with a goal at 6:46 by Anika Rodriguez. MacKenzie Cerda started the play by serving a long ball into the box to Jessie Fleming, who got a touch on it. Rodriguez swooped in on the ball and fired a shot into the upper left corner for her second goal of the season.
UCLA kept the clean sheet going until the 66th minute when Kelcey Cavarra tied it up on a long-distance bomb that went top shelf. The Bruins' attempts to reclaim the lead in the second half went for naught thanks to the effort of Arizona goalkeeper Lainey Burdett, who made good stops on shots by Fleming in the 69th minute and Julia Hernandez in the 82nd minute. The Wildcats had one last-ditch effort to score the game-winner at the end of regulation, but Hannah Stevens' last-second shot was saved by UCLA goalkeeper Teagan Micah.
Arizona outshot UCLA 5-0 in the first overtime, but just one of those shots were on target, and Micah made a nice save on a hard shot by Gabi Stoian in the 100th minute. The Bruins made their one overtime shot count in the 102nd minute, with Mace and Dunphy hooking up for the game-winner.
Micah earned the win for UCLA, making three saves. Burdett had six saves in a losing effort. UCLA had eight shots, all on goal, while Arizona took 12 shots, four of which were on frame.
UCLA will next host Washington on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 5pm in the first game of a doubleheader with the UCLA men's soccer team, who host California at 8pm.
