#20 Bruins Spread the Wealth in Sweep at OSU

CORVALLIS, Ore. -ย Freshman Torrey Van Winden again led the 20th-ranked Bruins with 14 kills, adding six digs and three blocks, while senior Taylor Formico produced 22 digs, as UCLA swept Oregon State on Friday at Gill Coliseum. Set scores were 25-14, 25-21, 25-20.

Junior Ryann Chandler (26 assists, seven digs) and freshman Kylie Miller (16 assists, nine digs) set UCLA to a .266 hitting percentage. The Bruins (14-4, 5-3 Pac-12) spread their offense around with six players registering at least four kills. Junior Reily Buechler had eight kills and four digs, senior Jennie Frager added seven kills and five blocks, sophomore Zana Muno tallied seven kills, 10 digs and three blocks, senior Jordan Anderson produced five kills and senior Claire Felix had four kills in an error-less 12 attempts (.333).

The Bruins led wire-to-wire in set one, scoring the first five points and seven of the first eight on kills by Frager, Buechler, Muno and Anderson, a combo block by Frager and Muno and two Oregon State errors. At 9-4, a 6-1 run brought the lead to double figures for the first time, as Buechler had three kills, Felix added two and Van Winden posted one. The Beavers trimmed their deficit to six at 17-11, but could get no closer. At 18-12, six in a row for the Bruins on kills by Muno and Van Winden, a Van Winden/Felix block and three OSU attack errors gave the visitors a dozen set points, as a Van Winden kill clinched the 25-14 win. Buechler led the Bruins with four kills, while Anderson, Muno and Van Winden all had three kills in the opener. Formico added eight digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Beavers .395 to .119.

Oregon State (8-10, 1-6 Pac-12) scored four of the first five points of set two, but UCLA quickly erased the deficit with a 7-0 run on kills by Frager, Anderson and Muno, a Frager/Muno block and three OSU errors. The closest the Beavers would get the rest of the way was two. At 9-7, a 6-1 run thanks to kills by Felix and Anderson, a Felix/Buechler kill and three more Beaver errors extended the lead to 15-8. At 15-10, the Bruins raised their advantage to a set-best eight on two kills by Van Winden, one by Frager and a Muno/Frager block to make it 19-11. OSU closed the gap to three at 22-19, but the Bruins would win the second on a Van Winden kill to post a 25-21 win. Van Winden led the Bruins with four kills, while Frager and Muno added three each. Formico had eight more digs in the second, Miller added six and Chandler posted four. The Bruins out-hit the Beavers .107 to .078.

The Bruins had a great comeback at the end of set three to finish off the sweep. With UCLA up 4-3, the Beavers scored four straight and eventually took a set-best lead of four. Oregon State led by that total as late as 17-13 before the Bruins scored 12 of the last 15 of the match to win the third 25-20. The first seven points of the run came on four Van Winden kills, a Buechler kill and combo block with Frager and two OSU errors. After the Beavers scored two of the next three, a Buechler kill and two kills by sophomore Kyra Rogers closed out the win. Van Winden added seven more kills in the third, Buechler had four and Frager posted three. Formico and Muno each had six digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Beavers .382 to .270.
