#15 Bruins Snap Skid Against #14 Stanford

LOS ANGELES -ย Freshman Torrey Van Winden tied a career high with 19 kills, adding a .417 hitting percentage and nine digs, as the 15th-ranked Bruins defeated #14 Stanford for the first time since 2011 to snap a seven-match losing streak to the Cardinal. Set scores were 17-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-22.

The Bruins (15-4, 6-3 Pac-12), behind the setting of junior Ryann Chandler (28 assists, five digs, three aces) and freshman Kylie Miller (19 assists, 11 digs), hit .260 for the match. In just three sets, senior Jordan Anderson posted 15 kills, while senior Jennie Frager added 11 with a .409 hitting percentage. Senior Taylor Formico notched 20 digs and seven assists, sophomore Zana Muno added 13 digs and junior Reily Buechler posted six kills.

UCLA never led in set one, dropping eight of the first 10 points of the match. The advantage for Stanford (11-6, 5-4 Pac-12) got as high as nine at 21-12, as the visitors took the opener 25-17. Frager and Van Winden both had three kills, while Formico added seven digs, as the Bruins were out-hit .289 to .167.

The Bruins scored the first two points of set two, dropped the next four and then netted nine in a row to go in front 11-4. Buechler had three kills during the 9-0 run, while Frager and Muno each had a kill and teamed up for a block. Stanford got as close as three at 13-10 and 14-11, but the Bruins began to pull away with a 7-1 run to go ahead by a set-best nine at 21-12. UCLA had three aces during the run, two from Chandler and one by Van Winden, who also chipped in with two kills. On UCLA's first set point, an Anderson kill closed out a 25-17 victory. Van Winden had four kills, Anderson and Buechler each added three and Formico tallied five digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Cardinal .281 to .152.

Despite three ties, the Bruins never trailed in set three. UCLA raced out to a 9-3 lead on three Anderson kills, a Buechler kill and ace, kills by Felix and Van Winden and two Cardinal errors. Stanford came back to even things up at 12- and 13-all, but the Bruins scored four in a row on back-to-back Anderson kills and consecutive hitting errors for Stanford to go ahead 17-13. The Cardinal were unable to get back to even, closing to within one at 21-20. However, the Bruins got four of the last five of the third behind kills by Frager and Muno and back-to-back spikes from Anderson to wrap up a 25-21 win. Anderson had nine kills in an error-free 15 swings, while Van Winden posted five kills. Formico added six digs. The Bruins out-hit the Cardinal .293 to .243.

Set four featured 15 ties and three lead changes, with the biggest lead for each team being three. With the Cardinal ahead 17-16, three in a row for the Bruins on a kill by Frager, a solo block from Anderson and a Buechler ace gave the home team their first lead since 5-4. Despite two more ties at 19- and 20-all, the Cardinal could not grab the lead back. A kill by Anderson and back-to-back from Van Winden put the Bruins ahead 23-20. The teams sided out from there, as a Stanford attack error finished up a 25-22 win. Van Winden paced the Bruins with seven kills, Frager added four and Anderson posted three, as the Bruins out-hit the Cardinal .293 to .263.
