LOS ANGELES -ย
The 15th-ranked Bruins set a season high with a .383 hitting percentage, as three players were in double figures in kills in UCLA's four-set victory against California on Sunday at the John Wooden Center. Set scores were 26-24, 22-25, 25-15, 25-17.
ย
Senior Jordan Anderson paced the Bruins with 15 kills, adding a .314 hitting percentage and three block solos, senior Jennie Frager added 13 kills, a .526 percentage and six blocks and freshman Torrey Van Winden posted 12 kills and a .526 hitting clip. Two more Bruins were just one shy of the double-figure mark, as senior Claire Felix recorded nine in an error-free 18 attempts (.500), while junior Reily Buechler posted nine kills and just one miscue in 17 swings (.471) with six digs. Junior Ryann Chandler (25 assists, four digs, two aces) and freshman Kylie Miller (27 assists, six digs, one ace) set the Bruins to their season-best percentage. Senior Taylor Formico had 14 digs, seven assists and a kill, sophomore Zana Muno added 11 digs and freshman Savvy Simo notched seven digs and an ace.
ย
Set one featured 14 ties and six lead changes, with the Bruins coming away with the opener. With UCLA trailing 7-5, the home squad went on an 8-2 run to go up 13-9. Buechler had two kills, Frager and Van Winden each posted one and Cal committed four attack errors. Trailing 16-12, it was the Golden Bears' turn to make a run, scoring nine of 12 to take a two-point edge at 21-19. Cal still led by a pair at 22-20, but the Bruins scored four of five to earn their first set point. Anderson had a solo block, Frager and Muno posted kills and Cal committed an attack error. The Bears saved the first set point, but an Anderson kill gave UCLA a second chance and a bad set by Cal wrapped up a 26-24 win for the Bruins. Van Winden had five kills to lead the Bruins in the opener, Anderson and Frager each posted four and Buechler recorded three. Formico added six digs. The Bruins out-hit the Golden Bears .325 to .262.
ย
Despite four ties, the Golden Bears never trailed in set two, jumping out to a quick 7-2 lead. A 6-2 Bruin run on three Anderson kills, one by Van Winden, a Miller ace and a Cal error got the home team to within one at 9-8. UCLA would end up evening things up at 11, but could not take a lead. A 7-1 Cal run extended its advantage to a set-best six at 18-12. The Bruins would make another run to even the score at 22, but Cal rattled off the final three points of the second to win it 25-22. Felix had a set-best four kills for the Bruins, while Anderson, Frager and Van Winden tallied three each. Muno added five digs. The Bruins were out-hit .300 to .242.
ย
The Bruins led from start to finish in set three, scoring the first three points on a Cal attack error and kills by Felix and Anderson. At 5-4, another 3-0 run on two Frager kills and a Simo ace made it 8-4 Bruins. A 6-0 run was in the works to put the Bruins up by nine at 19-10, as Chandler served a pair of aces, Frager posted a kill and a solo block, Van Winden had a kill and Cal committed an attack error. The largest lead of set three for UCLA was 10 at 24-14, which would be the same margin of victory in a 25-15 finish. The Bruins did not commit a hitting error out of the intermission break, going 15-for-23 for a .652 percentage to Cal's .250 clip. The Bruin middles were a combined 9-for-9 in kills (Frager 5-for-5, Felix 4-for-4), while Anderson added four kills.
ย
The only leads for Cal in set four were at 1-0 and 2-1, as three in a row on kills by Anderson and Van Winden and a Bear attack error put the Bruins up 4-2, a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the match. At 7-6, a Buechler kill, a Muno/Frager block and a Muno kill made it 10-6 Bruins. The closest Cal would get the rest of the way was one, but it was unable to square the match. At 17-15, the Bruins closed out the match with eight of the final 10 points. The first seven points came on two kills by Anderson, as well as a block solo, kills by Frager and Formico, a Frager/Buechler block and a Cal attack error to give the Bruins seven match points. It would only take one, as a roof from Van Winden and Felix finished up the 25-17 win. Buechler recorded five kills, while Anderson added four, as the Bruins out-hit the Golden Bears .343 to .103.
ย
The Bruins continue their four-match homestand next Friday when they host Colorado at the John Wooden Center at 6 p.m. The contest will air live on Pac-12 Network Los Angeles and will also feature free live audio on UCLABruins.com.
