UCLA Falls at No. 16 Stanford, 3-0
October 16, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Kevin Silva made eight saves in goal, while Seyi Adekoya recorded two shots on goal and Jackson Yueill tallied three shots as No. 17 UCLA fell to No. 16 Stanford, 3-0, on Sunday night from Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The loss snaps a three-match winning streak during Pac-12 play for the Bruins.
"Goals change games," said UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo. "At 1-0, we had two great chances to score and did not find the back of the net. The next two goals came from set pieces and that's the game. 3-0 is not indicative of our performance, but it's the reality. We have Cal in four days and have to be ready."
Stanford scored the opening goal of the match in the 66th minute as Sam Werner received a pass at the top of the box and finished low to the left post. The Cardinal increased their lead in the 76th minute as Tanner Beason collected a cleared ball off a corner kick and shot it to the left post passed an outsretched Silva.
Stanford added the final goal of the match in the 80th minute as Adam Mosharrafa scored off a free kick to the upper part of the net.
UCLA's best scoring chance came in the 69th minute as Yueill took a long-range shot that struck the crossbar. The rebound was collected by Brian Iloski and served back to Adekoya but his shot was saved to keep UCLA off the board.
After the first half, the match was locked at 0-0. The Bruins had a pair of scoring chances as Yueill took a shot from the top of the box in the 33rd minute but was blocked just wide of the net. Shortly after in the 35th minute Adekoya made a strong run through the defense but his shot was saved towards the far post.
UCLA (7-4-1, 3-2-0) returns home next week for a three-game homestand starting on Thursday, Oct. 20 against California from Drake Stadium scheduled to kick off at 8 pm after the women's soccer game at 5 pm versus Washington.
