LOS ANGELES -ย Senior Jennie Frager set a pair of career highs with 14 kills and a .737 hitting percentage, going error-free in 19 attempts to go with four blocks, as the 12th-ranked Bruins made it two straight sweeps with a victory over Illinois State on Saturday morning at Gersten Pavilion. Set scores were 25-9, 25-19, 25-17.

A trio of Bruins notched 12 digs, senior Taylor Formico, sophomore Zana Muno and freshman Savvy Simo. Junior Reily Buechler had a great all-around match with nine kills, seven digs, five blocks and two aces. Senior Claire Felix posted five kills in an error-less seven attempts (.714) with five blocks, while junior Ryann Chandler added 27 assists, seven digs and two aces. The Bruins (2-0) hit .360 for the match.

Just like they did Friday afternoon, the Bruins never trailed in the opening set. UCLA netted the first three points on kills by Frager and Buechler and an Illinois State attack error. At 6-3, another mini 3-0 run on a Felix kill, a Buechler solo block and a Chandler dump at the net extended the Bruins' lead to 9-3. Illinois State tallied the next two, but a 9-1 UCLA run broke things open. The first five points came on two Frager kills, two Chandler aces and a spike by senior Jordan Anderson. After an ISU sideout, an Anderson kill, a block by Frager and sophomore Kyra Rogers, a Redbird attack error and a Frager spike brought the advantage to 18-6.

Following another sideout, kills by Frager and Buechler and a Felix/Buechler block made it 21-7. The Redbirds got the next two, but two kills apiece by Felix and Buechler wrapped up a 25-9 win. Frager paced the Bruins with five kills and no errors in six attempts, Buechler added four kills and Felix was perfect in her three swings. Chandler, who also had two kills and nine assists, recorded two aces, while Formico and Muno posted four digs apiece. The Bruins hit .500 and held the Redbirds to a -.174 percentage.

Illinois State (1-1) had its biggest lead of the match at two at 10-8, but UCLA went on a sustained run to take the second. A 5-1 burst on a Buechler kill, combo blocks by Buechler and Felix and Muno and Felix, a Felix kill and a Buechler solo put the Bruins up 13-11. After a sideout, three in a row on kills by Simo and Anderson, as well as a Buechler ace, extended the lead to 16-12.

The Bruins' lead was at least three for the rest of the set, reaching as high as eight. At 18-15, a 5-0 run on three Illinois State errors, a Frager kill and a Simo ace made it 23-15. On their second set point, a kill by freshman Madeleine Gates closed out a 25-19 victory. Frager was error-free again in the second with five kills in nine attempts. Buechler added two kills, two aces, three digs and a couple of blocks, Muno had six digs and Chandler notched five digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Redbirds .237 to .158.

Illinois State held a slim 3-2 lead in set three before a 3-0 Bruin run on kills by Muno and Buechler and a Redbird error put UCLA ahead for good at 5-3. With the Bruins up 8-6, they went on an 8-2 run to double up the Redbirds at 16-8. The highlight of the run was a combination kick-dig-kill by Formico. Rogers added two kills during the run, while Frager had a block and a kill.

The Bruins' lead remained between five and eight for the rest of the set. At 22-17, UCLA netted the last three on back-to-back kills by Frager and a Buechler spike to post the 25-17 victory. Frager was 4-for-4 on swings in the third, while Buechler and Muno were also error-free with three kills each. Simo added seven digs, while Formico recorded six. The Bruins out-hit the Redbirds .382 to .179.
