UCLA Completes 3-0 Weekend With Win Over LMU

LOS ANGELES -ย Junior Reily Buechler had a double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs, senior Jennie Frager set a career high with 10 blocks to go with eight kills and senior Taylor Formico posted 19 digs, as the 12th-ranked Bruins finished the weekend undefeated with a four-set victory over #21 Loyola Marymount on Saturday night at Gersten Pavilion. Set scores were 20-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-19.

Frager was error-free in both matches on Saturday. After recording 14 kills in 19 attempts in Saturday's opener versus Illinois State, she had eight kills in 19 swings against LMU. Her 10 roofs were also the most in a match for UCLA since Nov. 23, 2012 (Zoe Nightingale vs. USC). Buechler recorded the seventh double-double of her career, adding four digs.

Senior Jordan Anderson was also in double figures in kills with 11, while junior Ryann Chandler had 40 assists and three digs. Freshman Madeleine Gates tallied six kills, five digs and four blocks, sophomore Zana Muno had 12 digs and freshman Savvy Simo notched seven digs. The Bruins hit .221 for the match.

The Lions (2-1) scored five of the first six points of the match and never looked back. LMU's largest lead was seven, as UCLA could get no closer than three. Trailing 23-17, the Bruins looked to get back in it following a Chandler ace, an LMU attack error and a Chandler/Frager kill, but UCLA would drop its first set of the season by a score of 25-20. Buechler led the Bruins with five kills, senior Claire Felix added three and Formico posted six digs, as the Bruins were out-hit .205 to .130.

LMU led for the first half of set two before UCLA went on an 11-0 run to take the second and even the match. The Lions' biggest lead was three at 8-5, but at 12-10, the Bruins netted 11 unanswered. Four of the first five points of the run were LMU errors to go with a Buechler kill. Back-to-back blocks, first by Chandler and Frager and then Frager by herself, extended the lead to 17-12.

After two more LMU errors, another Frager/Chandler roof and an Anderson kill put the Bruins ahead 21-12. The Lions posted two of the next three, but UCLA netted the final three of the set on a Frager kill and consecutive LMU attack errors, as the Bruins won it 25-14. Anderson had four kills, while Buechler added three kills and five digs, as UCLA hit .250 and held LMU to a -.057 percentage.

Despite one tie at 3-all, the Bruins did not trail in the third set to take a 2-1 lead in the match. At 6-5, a 4-1 run for UCLA, all on blocks (Anderson/Frager; sophomore Kyra Rogers/Frager twice and Buechler/Gates), made it 10-6. The Lions got to within a pair at 12-10, but four in a row for the Bruins on an LMU attack error, a Frager kill and solo stuff and a combo block by Anderson and Frager extended the lead to 16-10.

The Bruins' highest lead of the set was six, as LMU ended up getting to within two at 20-18. But UCLA scored five of the last six of the third to take it 25-19. A kill by Gates and two in a row from Anderson made it 23-19, and after a sideout, back-to-back LMU errors gave the Bruins a six-point triumph. Four different Bruins had at least two kills, with Anderson leading the way with three. UCLA had seven blocks in the set, with Frager putting her hand on five of them. Formico added five digs. UCLA out-hit LMU .194 to .079.

After the Bruins scored the first point of the fourth, the Lions came back to take a four-point lead. Still up by that margin at 13-9, UCLA scored four straight on kills by Buechler and Gates and two LMU errors to equal things at 13. Trailing 16-15, a Frager kill and a Buechler solo block gave UCLA its first lead since 1-0.

Following a sideout, UCLA finished the match with eight of the last 10 points. LMU committed three errors, Buechler added three kills and Anderson had three kills, including the match clincher in the 25-19 win. Buechler notched six kills in the fourth, while Frager and Gates each had three. Formico added seven digs, with the Bruins out-hitting the Lions .343 to .070.

UCLA heads to Honolulu next week for the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic. First up is a matchup with Pacific on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7:45 p.m. PT.
