HONOLULU, Hawai'i -ย Junior Ryann Chandler (43 assists, 11 digs) and sophomore Zana Muno (career-high 13 kills and 14 digs) each posted double-doubles, while senior Jordan Anderson led all players with 17 kills, as the eighth-ranked Bruins improved to 4-0 on the season with a four-set victory over Pacific on Thursday at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19.
ย
For the second match in a row, junior Reily Buechler set a new career high in digs, this time notching 15 to go with five kills. Senior Taylor Formico recorded 17 digs and freshman Savvy Simo added 13. Senior Jennie Frager posted eight kills and seven blocks and sophomore Kyra Rogers added five kills. The Bruins hit .193 for the match.
ย
The Bruins never led in dropping the opening set for the second match in a row. Pacific scored five of the first six and 10 of 12. UCLA came back with a 9-3 run to cut its deficit to two at 13-11. The Bruins had three blocks during the run, with Frager involved with all of them, as Buechler and Rogers each posted a kill and a block. The Tigers would extend their lead back up to five at 17-12.
ย
Still at five at 20-15, a 3-0 UCLA run on an Anderson kill, a Chandler ace and a Pacific attack error again got the Bruins to within two. However, the teams sided out the last nine points, as Pacific took the opener 25-22. Anderson led the Bruins with four kills, while Formico added six digs, as the Bruins were out-hit .289 to .200.
ย
The Tigers opened the second set strong just like the first, taking an 8-2 lead. UCLA came back with runs of 4-0 and 9-2 to take an 11-10 edge. Chandler had a kill and a block during the run. Pacific re-took the lead at 12-11, but three in a row for the Bruins on two errors and a Frager solo block made it 14-12. Pacific evened things at 14, but Bruin runs of 3-0, 6-1 and 8-2 gave them some distance.
ย
Muno factored in six of the eight points on three kills and two block assists. Pacific cut its deficit to a pair at 22-20, but the Bruins would score three of the last four of the second, including back-to-back kills by Anderson to wrap up the 25-21 win. Muno had four kills and five digs in the set, while Anderson added three kills. Simo recorded seven digs. UCLA out-hit Pacific .150 to .136.
ย
Pacific held an early 5-2 lead in set three, but the Bruins scored three in a row on a Tiger attack error and a solo block and kill by Anderson. The Tigers would have one-point edges at 6-5 and 7-6, but despite five ties after that, the Bruins would come back to take the third set. Even at 11, a Pacific service error, an Anderson kill and a Buechler ace put the Bruins up by three.
ย
At 15-13, UCLA scored four straight and six of seven to take a set-best lead of seven at 21-14. Anderson had a kill and a solo roof during the run, while Frager added a kill and a block assist. Pacific got to within four at 22-18, but UCLA scored the final three on a Buechler kill, a combo block by Chandler and senior Claire Felix and a Tiger attack error to win it 25-18. Anderson led the Bruins with six kills in the third, while Frager added three. Buechler recorded five digs. UCLA out-hit Pacific .371 to .171.
ย
The biggest deficit for the Bruins in the fourth was one. Down 8-7, UCLA scored four of five on kills by Muno and Frager and two Tiger errors to take an 11-9 lead. Pacific tied things up at 11 and 13, but the Bruins wouldn't trail for the rest of the set. At 16-15, the Bruins scored five in a row to take a comfortable lead.
ย
Anderson opened the run with back-to-back kills, which was followed by a Frager kill, a Chandler solo block and an Anderson/Frager roof to make it 21-15. The teams traded sideouts for the next eight points, as on a Muno kill, the Bruins won the fourth 25-19. Muno paced UCLA with five kills and seven digs in the fourth, while Anderson and Frager each had four kills. Formico added seven digs. The Bruins out-hit the Tigers .107 to .024.
