UCLA Makes It Five Straight Wins

HONOLULU, Hawai'i -ย Junior Ryann Chandler notched her second double-double in a row with 45 assists and 15 digs, adding a career-best five kills, while junior Reily Buechler also had a double-double with a team-best 17 kills and 11 digs, as the eighth-ranked Bruins made it five in a row to start the season with a four-set victory over Missouri State on Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 21-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-15.

A total of four Bruins were in double figures in kills, while five had at least 10 digs. Seniors Jordan Anderson, Claire Felix and Jennie Frager all had 11 kills, with Frager adding five blocks. Sophomore Zana Muno had 15 digs and five kills, senior Taylor Formico recorded 13 digs and freshman Savvy Simo notched 10 digs. The Bruins hit .302 for the match.

Missouri State (2-3) raced out to an 11-7 lead before UCLA scored seven of eight to go up by a couple. The first two points came on Bear attack errors, which was followed by three Buechler kills, a Chandler kill and a Felix solo block to make it 14-12.

The opening set featured 13 ties and six lead changes. UCLA still held a two-point edge at 18-16, but Missouri State netted three straight to go up by one. A Frager kill and a Bear attack error put the Bruins back up at 20-19. The score was equal at 21, but Missouri State posted the last four of the opener to take the set 25-21. Buechler led the Bruins with four kills, while Chandler added three kills, four digs and six assists. The Bruins were out-hit .103 to .102.

The Bruins didn't trail in the second set to even the match. The only tie in the set was at 2-all, as UCLA scored five of six from that point, including three kills by Felix, to make it 7-3. The Bears trimmed their deficit to one at 9-8, but that was as close as they got.

With the score 18-15, the Bruins recorded seven of the last eight points to take the second 25-16. The first five points came on three Buechler kills, a Felix/Muno block and a Missouri State attack error. After a sideout, Felix notched back-to-back kills to wrap up a 25-16 victory. Felix had six kills in the second, while Buechler and Frager added four apiece. The Bruins out-hit the Bears .500 to .242.

UCLA also led throughout the third set, racing out to a 9-1 lead on two kills and a solo block by Buechler, a Simo kill and five Missouri State errors. ย The Bears got to within four at 14-10, but Frager had a kill and a combo block with Muno to go back up by half a dozen at 16-10.

Missouri State brought its deficit to one with a late run, but UCLA scored the last six of the third to take it 25-18. The run began with an Anderson kill, and then consecutive blocks by Anderson and Frager and Chandler and Felix. After an MSU attack error, a Frager kill gave the Bruins set point, and another Bear error put UCLA up 2-1 in the match. Buechler and Frager each had three kills in the third, while Muno and Simo both posted five digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Bears .222 to .000.

There were no ties in the fourth set, as the Bruins led wire-to-wire to win the fourth and the match. UCLA scored the first three on a Muno kill and back-to-back spikes from Buechler. The closest the Bears would get the rest of the way was a pair. At 8-6, UCLA used a 7-2 run to break it open. Anderson had three kills during that run, while Muno was a part of three points on two kills and a block assist.

With the score 21-15, the Bruins ran off the last four points of the match on two MSU errors, a Frager kill and a Muno kill to win the fourth 25-15. Anderson paced the Bruins with seven kills in the fourth, Buechler added six and Muno notched four. Chandler and Formico both had five digs. The Bruins out-hit the Bears .500 to .200.
