SEATTLE, Wash. - Junior Madeline Jelenicki and freshman Bubba Nickles each had a pair of hits and three runs batted in, but the 13th-ranked Bruins dropped a 12-7 decision to #8 Washington on Sunday at Husky Softball Stadium.
The Bruins (26-9, 2-4 Pac-12) had seven hits from four different players, as sophomore Brianna Tautalafua also posted a two-hit contest. In the circle, redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia struck out three in 4 1/3 innings, giving up four runs, nine hits and two walks, junior Johanna Grauer (9-4) walked both batters she faced, with each of them scoring, and junior Selina Ta'amilo fanned two in 1 2/3 frames of relief, allowing six runs, eight hits and two walks.
Washington (27-8, 4-5 Pac-12) scored in its first at-bat on a home run by Casey Stangel, but UCLA took the lead with a two-run shot in the second. Sophomore Paige Halstead led off with a single to left, and two outs later, Nickles crushed her fifth homer of the season to right-center to put the Bruins up.
An RBI single by Stangel in the second tied the game, while a solo homer by Ali Aguilar in the fourth gave Washington a 3-2 lead.
In the fifth, the Bruins evened things up again. With one out, senior Delaney Spaulding walked and moved to third after an infield single by Tautalafua and a Washington error. Jelenicki followed with a sacrifice fly to center to tie the score at three.
In the bottom of the fifth, Washington broke the tie with five runs on a double steal, a two-run homer by Aguilar and RBI singles from Taylor Van Zee and Sis Bates.
In the sixth, UCLA got closer with a pair of runs. With one out, senior Gabrielle Maurice walked and scored on a double to left by Nickles, who moved to third on an error. After a walk to sophomore Zoe Shaw, junior Kylee Perez lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Nickles to make it 8-5.
The Huskies extended their lead with four in the sixth on a three-run homer by Stangel and an RBI single by Maggie Gallagher. UCLA never quit, scoring two more times in the seventh. Tautalafua singled to lead off and scored on Jelenicki's eighth homer of the season to left-center to make it 12-7, which would end up being the final score.
The Bruins return to Easton Stadium next weekend to host Oregon, starting on Friday at 7 p.m.
