Maurice Walks It Off for #13 Bruins

LOS ANGELESย -ย Senior Gabrielle Maurice completed the 13th-ranked Bruins' comeback on Friday night against California, recording an RBI double to score freshman Bubba Nickles, who tied the game with a two-run single, as UCLA won 3-2 at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins (31-12, 6-7 Pac-12) had just five hits, but three came in their final turn at-bat, as Maurice had a pair of hits for the game. In the circle, redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia (14-7) struck out nine in a complete-game, six-hitter, giving up two unearned runs and two walks. She struck out at least one in six of the seven innings, fanning a pair in the first, fifth and sixth, while recording a 1-2-3 frame in the second.
The seventh-inning comeback began with a leadoff single to left by junior Madeline Jelenicki, with sophomore Imani Johnson coming in to pinch-run. Garcia followed with a walk, as freshman Jenna Crawford ran for her, and both pinch-runners moved up on a sacrifice by sophomore Paige Halstead. Nickles then singled the opposite way to right to score both Johnson and Crawford to tie the game, and when the ball got away from the Cal right fielder, Nickles came all the way around to third. Maurice would walk it off in the next at-bat, doubling off the wall in left-center to give the Bruins the 3-2 win.
California (26-14, 3-9 Pac-12) posted single runs in the fourth, on an RBI single by Khala Taylor, and in the seventh, on an RBI single by Lindsay Rood.
The Bruins and the Golden Bears continue their three-game series on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will air live on Pac-12 Network National and Los Angeles.
