LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA women's volleyball program recorded the 1,300th win in school history, while senior Zana Muno surpassed the 1,300-dig mark for her illustrious career, as the 20th-ranked Bruins posted a sweep of No. 25 Arizona State on Wednesday at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Set scores were 25-13, 25-20, 25-14.
Junior Kylie Miller notched her second double-double of the season and eighth of her career with 33 assists and 13 digs, setting the Bruins (9-5, 4-3 Pac-12) to a .293 hitting percentage. Sophomore Mac May contributed 13 kills, five digs and a career-best four aces, junior Madeleine Gates added 12 kills, a .476 hitting percentage and four blocks and Muno finished the match with 14 digs to move into fifth all-time in UCLA history (1,305). Sophomore Jenny Mosser collected seven kills, seven digs and two aces, redshirt freshman Alexis Light had six kills, senior Kyra Rogers notched five kills and junior Savvy Simo tallied five digs.
The Bruins' largest deficit in set one was a pair at 5-3. From that point, UCLA scored 22 of the next 30 points to take the opener. Included in a 9-1 run were two kills by Gates and two blocks from the junior, teaming up with Light and Miller. May also added two kills, Mosser served an ace and Arizona State (13-6, 4-3 Pac-12) made two errors. After splitting the next four points, the Bruins scored six in a row on three May kills, one by Rogers and two Sun Devil errors to extend their lead to a set-best 12 at 20-8. A dozen would be the final margin of the first set for the Bruins in a 25-13 triumph, as Mosser finished things with a kill, her third of the set. May was error-free in the opener with six kills in nine attempts to go with four digs, while Gates was a perfect 4-for-4 with three blocks. The Bruins hit .333 and held the Sun Devils to a -.103 percentage.
UCLA scored the first eight points of set two in leading the whole way. Mosser had two kills, Rogers and Light each posted a kill and teamed up for a block, May served an ace and ASU made two errors. The closest the Sun Devils got the rest of the way was two on a few occasions. At 20-18, the Bruins scored five of the last seven to go up 2-0 in the match. Light, Gates and May all had kills, with the final two points coming on an ASU service error and a May solo stuff to make it a 25-20 win. Light and May each had four kills, while Mosser added three. Miller recorded eight digs and Muno had four. The Bruins out-hit the Sun Devils .143 to .079.
The only tie in set three came after the first two points were scored, as UCLA followed with four of five on a May kill and ace, a Light kill and a Rogers ace to go up for good. With the score 15-11, the Bruins went on a 10-3 run to end the match. The first seven points came on three Gates kills, a Mosser kill and ace and two ASU errors to give the Bruins a set-best lead of 11. The teams sided out the last six points, as a May kill appropriately ended a 25-14 final set. Gates was 6-for-7 with no errors in the third, May added three kills and Muno recorded seven digs. The Bruins out-hit the Sun Devils, .500 to .192.
Up next for the Bruins is a Friday tilt against No. 23 Arizona at 7 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The match will feature a free live video stream at UCLABruins.com.
