No. 20 Bruins Battle in Third, Fall to No. 2 Stanford

LOS ANGELES - Senior Zana Munoย recorded a season-best 27 digs in just three sets to go with seven assists, while sophomore Mac May added 15 kills and 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the year, but the 20th-ranked Bruins fell to No. 2 Stanford on Sunday at Pauleyย Pavilion presented by Wescom. Set scores were 25-22, 25-20, 26-24.
Junior Kylie Miller posted 29 assists and six digs, redshirtย freshman Alexis Light had seven kills and senior Kyra Rogers and sophomore Jenny Mosser each tallied five kills.ย
Set one featured seven ties and a pair of lead changes. The Bruins (11-8, 6-6 Pac-12) jumped out to as much as a six-point lead. UCLA scored seven of the first nine to prompt a Stanford timeout, as Light and junior Madeleine Gates both had two kills, Rogers added one and the Cardinal made two errors. A Rogers/Mosser block got the Bruins lead to half a dozen for the first time at 12-6. With UCLA still up 17-13, Stanford (20-1, 12-0 Pac-12) scored four in a row to even things at 17. Six sideouts later, the Cardinal tallied their first lead since the opening point of the match at 21-20. The Bruins scored the next one, but Stanford netted four of the last five to win the opener, 25-22. Muno recorded 10 digs, while Gates, Light and May all had three kills, as the Bruins were out-hit .310 to .211.
Stanford led throughout the second set, as the only tie was following the first two points. The Cardinal's biggest lead was six, as they eventually won the second by a score of 25-20. Munoย had six digs, May added five and Rogers notched three kills, as the Bruins were out-hit .233 to .098.
The third set featured 11 ties and seven lead changes. The Bruins' largest lead was two, as they scored six of the first 10 points of the third. Stanford would have its largest lead of the set be five at 21-16, at which point the Bruins scored five in a row to even the match. Light started the run with a kill and a block with Gates, with three Cardinal errors tying the score. After ties at 22 and 23, a May kill gave the Bruins a set point, but the Cardinal came back with the next three to win the third and the match. May was in double figures in kills with 10 of the Bruins' 15, while Muno added 11 digs. The Bruins were out-hit .186 to .100.
