Set one was the closest of the match with 10 ties and a pair of lead changes. After the teams split the first 10 points, the Bruins (12-8, 7-6 Pac-12) found themselves down by nine following an 11-2 Oregon State run. UCLA slowly made its way back in it, scoring six of seven on two Gates blocks, one with Light and one with Miller, kills by Mosser and Gates and two Beaver errors. Still down by five at 20-15, two May kills and one each from Rogers and Mosser made it a one-point difference. Despite the early deficit, the Bruins would end up earning a set point at 24-23 following a 4-1 run on kills by Mosser and Gates and two OSU errors. The Beavers (11-14, 1-12 Pac-12) saved three set points in the opener after UCLA leads of 25-24 and 26-25, scoring the final three points of the first to take it by a score of 28-26. UCLA's largest lead would be five at 21-16, but Oregon State rallied back with the next four to cut it to 21-20. Following a Rogers kill, the Bruins held a 23-21 lead only to see the Beavers net the next three and earn a match point. However, UCLA would not be denied in the fourth, as a Rogers kill, an OSU attack error and a Rogers/Mosser block gave the Bruins a 26-24 win. The Bruin middles were error-free in the fourth, as Rogers was 5-for-7 and Gates was 5-for-10. Muno had six digs, Miller added four and May posted three kills and four digs. After OSU got the next two, four in a row on a Beaver error, a Simo ace and May and Gates kills gave the Bruins six match points. On their second attempt, a May kill closed out the 15-9 win in the fifth. Gates was again error-free with four kills in seven swings, while Simo had five digs.
