LOS ANGELES - Senior Zana Muno recorded a match-high 19 digs, while sophomore Mac May notched a team-best 10 kills, but the 17th-ranked Bruins dropped a three-set decision to No. 20 Oregon on Friday at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
Junior Madeleine Gates and redshirt freshman Alexis Light each had seven kills, senior Kyra Rogers posted five kills, junior Savvy Simo tallied seven digs and sophomore Jenny Mosser added four kills and seven digs. Junior Kylie Miller (15 assists, seven digs) and freshman Devon Chang (14 assists, four digs) split the setting duties.
The only lead for the Bruins (7-5, 2-3 Pac-12) in the opening set was one at 1-0 and 3-2. The largest advantage for Oregon (10-5, 3-2 Pac-12) was four on several occasions. At 14-11, a Light solo block and kills by Gates and May evened the score at 14. But the Bruins were unable to take the lead back, eventually dropping the first set by a score of 25-21. May paced the Bruins with five kills, while Gates and Light were both error free with three kills. Muno added six digs. The Bruins were out-hit .262 to .143.
UCLA never led in set two. Oregon's largest lead was nine, as the Ducks won the second by a score of 25-18. Rogers was 4-for-7 with no errors in the second. Muno posted six digs and Miller had five. The Bruins were out-hit .250 to .103.
The Bruins led by one at 1-0 and 2-1 in set three, but the advantage would be short-lived, as Oregon scored seven in a row to go up by six. UCLA would narrow its deficit to one on a few occasions, but could not even the score, dropping the third, 25-23. May was 5-for-8 with no errors in the third, while Gates added three kills. Muno notched seven digs. The Bruins were out-hit .186 to .179.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday against Oregon State at 7 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The match will not be televised, but will feature a free video stream on UCLABruins.com.
