PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. - The top-ranked Bruins won their fourth consecutive tournament, starting their spring schedule with a victory at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, while junior Lilia Vu won her second straight event and sixth of her career with another comeback victory.
UCLA, which was tied with Alabama heading into Tuesday's final round at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, shot a 7-over 291 to finish at +15 (867), four strokes better than the Crimson Tide.
Vu, who was five shots back going into the final round, tied for the low round of the day, playing bogey-free golf to share medalist honors at 1-under 212. She made a birdie on the ninth, as well as back-to-back birdies on #15 and #16, to go with 15 pars for a 3-under 68. After winning four tournaments in a row last season to set a school record, Vu has made it two wins in a row, both in comeback fashion, after ending the fall with a victory at the Battle at the Beach.
Junior Beth Wu placed solo fifth at 2-over 215, recording a 2-over 73 on Tuesday. She made a pair of birdies on #6 and #12, two bogeys and one double. Freshman Patty Tavatanakit tied for 11th (+6, 219), shooting an 8-over 79 in her final round, producing four birdies (#3, #7, #13 and #16), four bogeys, a double and a 10.
Sophomore Mariel Galdiano tied for 30th (+10, 223) thanks to an even-par 71, posting birdies on #6, #11 and #12, one bogey and a double bogey. Senior Joo Seo tied for 76th (+22, 235), scoring a 9-over 80 on Tuesday with birdies on #6, #16 and #2, 10 bogeys and a double. Senior Erin Choi, playing as an individual, tied for 79th (+24, 237), posting a 78 (+7) on Tuesday on a sixth-hole birdie and eight bogeys.
The Bruins return to the course on Feb. 26 and 27, hosting the Bruin Wave Invitational at the San Luis Obispo Country Club in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
