SEATTLE - The top-ranked and defending Pac-12 champion Bruins made it back-to-back titles on Tuesday at the Broadmoor Golf Club, winning by 12 strokes, while freshman Patty Tavatanakit defeated junior teammate Lilia Vu in a playoff to take home medalist honors.
The Bruins were the only team under par on Tuesday, shooting a 1-under 287 to finish at 4-under 860 (under par in all three rounds.). UCLA finished a dozen shots ahead of second-place USC (+8, 872). It marks the seventh conference championship for the Bruins (1990, 1991, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2017).
In the medalist race, Tavatanakit and Vu were tied at 8-under 208 after 54 holes, each shooting 2-under 70s on Tuesday. Tavatanakit made six birdies on #1, #4, #7, #8, #10 and #13 to go with two bogeys and a double. Vu made four birdies (#11, #13 and #15) in her last eight holes, including the 18th to force a tie with Tavatanakit, who was in the group behind Vu and parred #18. The two went back to the 18th for a playoff, with Tavatanakit making par and Vu making bogey to give the freshman her third career individual title and second in a row (won Silverado Showdown to close regular season).
Tavatanakit is the sixth Bruin golfer to take home medalist honors at the conference championships (Lisa Kiggens, 1991; Charlotte Mayorkas, 2004; Tiffany Joh, 2007; Alison Lee, 2014; Vu, 2017).
Junior Beth Wu tied for 23rd (+6, 222), posting a 1-over 73 in her final round. She made two birdies on #1 and #13 and three bogeys. Sophomore Mariel Galdiano placed 29th (+9, 225) following a 2-over 74 on Tuesday. She tallied a pair of birdies on #4 and #11 and four bogeys. Sophomore Clare Legaspi tied for 38th (+13, 229) after shooting a 2-over 74. She made an eagle-2 on the par-4 7th, adding birdies on #1, #12 and #15 to go with seven bogeys.
Following the event, the Pac-12 All-Conference Teams were announced, as Galdiano, Tavatanakit and Vu earned First Team honors, while Wu was named to the Second Team.
The Bruins will learn where they are sent for NCAA Regionals (May 7-9) when Golf Channel airs the selection show on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
