LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Jenny Mosser recorded the third double-double of her career, posting a match-best 19 kills to go with career highs in digs (14) and blocks (6), as the 11th-ranked Bruins produced another four-set victory over Gonzaga on Sunday at the John Wooden Center. Set scores were 25-19, 25-27, 26-24, 25-18.
Sophomore Mac May added 17 kills, eight digs and two aces, senior Zana Muno had 22 digs and freshman Sawyer Aigner-Swesey posted 13 digs. Junior Madeleine Gates had nine kills and eight blocks, senior Kyra Rogers added seven kills and five blocks and junior Savvy Simo tallied nine digs. The setting duties were split between freshman Devon Chang (32 assists, seven digs) and junior Kylie Miller (18 assists, six digs). The Bruins hit .199 for the match.
The Bruins pulled away late in the opening set, which featured 10 ties and three lead changes. UCLA scored four in a row after surrendering the first point of the match on kills by Rogers and Mosser and two Gonzaga attack errors. The Bulldogs would regain the lead at 8-7, and 12 sideouts later, still led 14-13. But a Gates kill, a Gonzaga error and a May kill gave the Bruins the lead for good. Leading 18-17, four in a row on a May kill and ace, a combo block by Rogers and redshirt freshman Alexis Light and a Gonzaga attack error made it 22-17. The Bruins saw their lead get to as much as six, which would also be the final margin following Mosser's seventh kill of the opener, as UCLA won 25-19. The sophomore had just one error in 10 attempts for a .600 percentage in the first set, with May adding three kills. Muno had four digs. The Bruins hit .212 and held the Bulldogs to a -.032 hitting percentage.
Neither team led by more than three in a second set which featured 14 ties and five lead changes. Early on, Gonzaga had three-point leads at 7-4, 8-5 and 9-6, while UCLA held a two-point edge at 12-10. Moving ahead to a tie score at 19-all, back-to-back May kills gave the Bruins a 21-19 lead. Still up by two at 22-20, four in a row for Gonzaga earned the visitors two set points. A Mosser kill and a Gates/Light block saved both attempts, with UCLA thwarting a third Gonzaga set point on another Mosser kill. But the Bulldogs got the next two and won the third by a score of 27-25. May had seven kills in the second to go with five digs, while Mosser added six kills and four digs. Chang recorded 15 assists and six digs, Muno had 10 digs and Aigner-Swesey posted four digs. The Bruins out-hit the Bulldogs .196 to .160.
The Bruins staged a dramatic comeback in the third to steal the set. Leading 7-6, the Bruins scored five of eight to go ahead by a set-best four. UCLA still led by three at 15-12, but a 10-3 Gonzaga run gave the visitors a 22-18 advantage. The Bulldogs took a 24-21 lead to earn three set points, but the Bruins saved them all on a kill by Rogers and back-to-back Mosser/Gates blocks. Following a Gonzaga timeout, a Gates kill gave the Bruins a set point and Mosser finished things off to give the Bruins a 26-24 victory. Mosser had four kills and five digs, Gates added four kills and three blocks and Rogers recorded three kills. Simo added eight digs, Muno had five and Aigner-Swesey posted four, as the Bruins out-hit the Bulldogs .138 to .111.
The Bruins' largest deficit in set four was just one on a few occasions. Trailing 5-4, the Bruins scored eight of 10 to take a 12-7 lead. Gates and May both had two kills during the run, Rogers added one and Gonzaga made three errors. The Bruins' lead remained between four and seven for the rest of the set, as a final block by Mosser and Gates wrapped up a 25-18 victory. May was error-free in the fourth with five kills in seven attempts. Aigner-Swesey and Miller each had four digs, while Mosser added four blocks. The Bruins out-hit the Bulldogs .310 to .132.
UCLA is back in action on Friday, Aug. 31 against 16th-ranked Baylor at 1 p.m. The match will be played at San Diego's Jenny Craig Pavilion as part of the USD Invitational.
