SAN DIEGO - Sophomore Mac May set a career high with 21 kills and tied a personal best with nine digs, as the 10th-ranked Bruins came back to defeat No. 12 Baylor in five sets on Friday at Jenny Craig Pavilion. Set scores were 25-21, 15-25, 11-25, 25-21, 18-16.

Sophomore Jenny Mosser recorded her second double-double of the season and fourth of her career with 12 kills and a career-best 20 digs. Freshman Devon Chang chalked up her first double-double with 31 assists and 15 digs. Senior Zana Muno posted 21 digs, junior Madeleine Gates produced nine kills, freshman Hawley Harrer had seven kills and six digs, senior Kyra Rogers added six kills, eight digs and six blocks and junior Savvy Simo tallied seven digs.

The Bruins (3-0) never trailed in set one, leading by as many as four on several occasions. Leading 7-5, a 3-1 run on a Rogers kill and two Baylor attack errors gave UCLA its first four-point lead. The Bears (4-1) were down 19-16 before scoring three in a row to tie the score. It would be tied again at 21, but the Bruins scored the last four points of the opener. Gates began the run with a kill, which was followed by a Baylor attack error, a Mosser kill and another Baylor error to give the Bruins a 25-21 win. May was 6-for-8 in kill attempts with no hitting errors, with Mosser adding four kills, and Gates going 3-for-6 with no miscues. Muno had six digs. The Bruins out-hit the Bears .324 to .156.

The only leads for UCLA in set two were 1-0 and 3-2, as Baylor scored five of the next six and didn't trail for the rest of the second. The Bears' largest lead was 10 at 24-14 and 25-15. May had six kills and no errors in 11 attempts, Muno posted eight digs and Mosser notched six digs, as the Bruins were out-hit .310 to .146. It wasn't much better for the Bruins in the third, as they never led in a 25-11 setback. Mosser had three kills to lead the Bruins in set three, with Chang and May each recording four digs. The Bruins were out-hit .350 to .031.

The Bruins responded in the fourth by trailing only once at 7-6. UCLA scored eight of the next 10 to go ahead by a set-best five at 14-9. Chang, Gates, Harrer and Rogers all had kills, Mosser served an ace, Rogers and Chang teamed up for a block and Baylor made two errors. Baylor cut a 22-17 deficit to 22-21 with four in a row, but the Bruins scored the final three of the fourth on a May kill and two Bear errors to win the set by a score of 25-21. Harrer was 5-for-10 with no errors in the fourth, May added four kills and Gates had three. Mosser recorded seven digs, Chang had five with 12 assists and Simo added four digs. The Bruins out-hit the Bears .222 to .091.

Even at five in set five, the Bruins scored six of eight to take a set-best lead of four at 11-7. May had two kills during the 6-2 run, Rogers had a kill and teamed up on two blocks, one with Chang and another with Harrer, and Baylor committed an error. The Bruins had three match points at 14-11, but Baylor saved them all. A Gates kill gave the Bruins a fourth match point, but the Bears scored the next two to earn one of their own. A May kill evened the score at 16, which was followed by a Baylor attack error. Finally, on their fifth match point, the Bruins won it on an ace by Chang to close out an 18-16 win. May and Mosser both had three kills, while Chang had four digs, as the Bruins out-hit Baylor .333 to .286.
