NO. 10 BRUINS FACE TWO RANKED FOES IN SAN DIEGO
The 10th-ranked Bruins travel south this weekend for the USD Invitational at San Diego's Jenny Craig Pavilion. It will be two matchups against fellow ranked teams, as UCLA takes on No. 12 Baylor on Friday at 1 p.m. and No. 19 San Diego on Sunday at 5 p.m. Live video and stats links will be available at UCLABruins.com.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bruins head up the 101 Freeway to San Luis Obispo for a two-match series at No. 24 Cal Poly. The contests will be played on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. and Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
The Bruins were ranked 10th in this week's AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, earning 984 points, 134 more than last week. UCLA is one of seven Pac-12 teams ranked in the Top 25 (No. 1 Stanford, No. 7 USC, No. 13 Washington, No. 18 Oregon, No. 21 Colorado and No. 22 Utah), with Washington State, Oregon State and Arizona also receiving votes. In addition, No. 12 Baylor, No. 19 San Diego and No. 24 Cal Poly are also on the Bruins' schedule.
SCOUTING THE BAYLOR BEARS
Baylor went 3-0 at its home tournament last weekend, defeating LSU and Marquette in four sets and Texas State in three. Sophomore Yossiana Pressley led the Bears last weekend with 4.91 kills per set, while redshirt junior Shelly Fanning was second at 3.73 kps, with each serving five aces. Juniors Braya Hunt (6.18 assists per set) and Hannah Fluegel (5.27) split the setting duties. Junior Tara Wulf is tops on the squad with 4.00 digs per set, while Fanning leads the way with 1.09 blocks per set. The Bruins and the Bears have played four times, with UCLA holding a 3-1 edge. The last matchup between the two teams came at Pauley Pavilion on Dec. 3, 2016, with the Bruins sweeping Baylor in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. This will be the first neutral site match between the two teams.
SCOUTING THE SAN DIEGO TOREROS
San Diego lost both of its matches last weekend at Washington in four and three sets, respectively. The Toreros, who play Baylor on Saturday before taking on the Bruins on Sunday, were led by senior Lauren Fuller's 4.00 kills per set last weekend. Junior Anna Newsome (6.71 assists per set) and freshman Laura Madill (5.33) split the setting duties. Sophomore Roxie Wiblin is first with 2.57 digs per set, while senior Addie Picha is first with 1.43 blocks per set. The Bruins are 9-1 all-time against the Toreros, sweeping San Diego in Honolulu last Aug. 25. USD snapped an eight-match losing streak to UCLA at Jenny Craig Pavilion on Sept. 10, 2016 with a four-set victory. The Bruins and the Toreros have split two meetings all-time at JCP.
