NO. 16 UCLA CLOSES NON-CON SLATE AT LBSU
The 16th-ranked Bruins close out their non-conference schedule on Thursday at Long Beach State at 7 p.m. The match will feature live audio and video, with links on the women's volleyball schedule page on UCLABruins.com.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Pac-12 Conference play begins next week, with the Bruins traveling to USC on Wednesday, Sept. 19 (8 p.m. on ESPNU) and Utah on Friday, Sept. 21 (6 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks).
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
The Bruins dropped seven spots to 16th in this week's AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll. UCLA is one of seven Pac-12 teams ranked in the Top 25 (No. 2 Stanford, No. 12 Oregon, No. 13 Washington, No. 16 USC, No. 22 Washington State and Nov. 24 Utah), with Colorado, Arizona and Oregon State also receiving votes. In addition, No. 14 Cal Poly, No. 18 Baylor and No. 23 San Diego are also on the Bruins' schedule.
NEWS AND NOTES
Senior Zana Muno has moved into 11th place in UCLA history in digs with 1,184 and will likely get into the Top 10 on Thursday. Next up on the list are Kelly Reeves (10th, 1,186) and Jenny Johnson (9th, 1,214) ... the Bruins had 22 blocks in the Sept. 2 victory at then-No. 19 San Diego, their highest total since Nov. 8, 2007 against Oregon State. This century, UCLA has five matches with at least 20 blocks, with the 22 at USD ranking third on that list ... senior Kyra Rogers, who leads the team with seven block solos, has at least one in all six matches, producing at least four blocks in five of six contests. Offensively, Rogers has at least six kills in every match, posting zero or one hitting errors in three of those contests ... freshman Hawley Harrer has started each of the last three matches, recording seven kills at both San Diego and in the first match at Cal Poly (Sept. 6). She also combined for five aces in those two contests ... sophomore Jenny Mosser has double-doubles in five matches in a row, as she is tied for the team lead in kills per set and third in digs per set. Mosser had a season-best 19 kills against Gonzaga on Aug. 26, posting a career-high 20 digs versus Baylor on Aug. 31 ... freshman Devon Chang has double-doubles in three of the last four contests, having started the last three matches at setter. She also has exactly one kill in all six contests ... Muno has four double-figure digs contests this season to give her 62 for her career. Her first three double-figure digs matches each went over 20, giving her 25 such contests in her career ... junior Savvy Simo has three matches in a row with at least 20 digs to give her four for her career. After tying personal bests with 20 digs in back-to-back contests at San Diego and Cal Poly, Simo set a new career high with 25 on Sept. 7 at Cal Poly ... sophomore Mac May has double figures in kills in five of six matches, giving her 17 career contests with at least 10 kills. Along with having at least one block in every match, she also has an ace in three of her six contests ... junior Madeleine Gates has at least nine kills in all of her matches, including double figures in four of them. She has just 11 hitting errors in six matches, swinging .300 or better in four contests. Defensively, Gates has at least five blocks in three matches, including a career-high 11 at San Diego.
SCOUTING THE LONG BEACH STATE 49ERS
Long Beach State (6-4) has followed up each of its two-match losing streaks with a three-match winning streak, having won three in a row against Texas Tech, Princeton and Towson. The 49ers are averaging 12.46 kills, 1.59 aces, 13.72 digs and 2.35 blocks per set, hitting .208 as a team. Three players are averaging at least two kills per set, with junior Hailey Harward first with 2.97 kps to go with a team-best 18 aces, freshman Kashauna Williams second at 2.74 kps and senior Tyler Spriggs third at 2.11. Freshman Carly Aigner-Swesey, the twin sister of Bruin freshman Sawyer Aigner-Swesey, has handled most of the setting duties and is averaging 8.65 assists per set. Freshman Carly Hill leads the way with 3.97 digs per set, while junior YiZhi Xue (1.08) and redshirt senior Emma Kirst (1.00) are each averaging at least a block per set.
THE SERIES: UCLA VS. LONG BEACH STATE
UCLA has won seven matches in a row over Long Beach State and leads the all-time series, 61-19. Each of the last three contests have occurred at the Walter Pyramid, with the Bruins winning in four every time. UCLA is 19-6 all-time in Long Beach, having won four in a row at the Walter Pyramid.
