LONG BEACH, Calif. -ย Sophomore Mac May produced the first double-double of her career with 17 kills and a personal-best 11 digs, as the 16th-ranked Bruins closed non-conference play with a four-set victory over Long Beach State on Thursday at the Walter Pyramid.
ย
Freshman Devon Chang also had a double-double, her fourth of the season, with 34 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Jenny Mosser added 11 kills and seven digs, freshman Hawley Harrer posted 10 kills and four digs and junior Madeleine Gates produced eight kills and six blocks. Defensively, senior Zana Muno had 15 digs, junior Savvy Simo added 13 and senior Kyra Rogers notched four blocks.
ย
The first set featured six ties and four lead changes, with the Bruins (5-2) making a run late to take the opener. Trailing 7-4, the Bruins scored four of five on a Mosser kill and ace, a May kill and a 49er attack error to even things at eight. UCLA was unable to re-take the lead though until going on a 5-1 run to go up by one. Down 17-14, kills by Harrer and May, a Gates solo block and two Long Beach errors put the Bruins up 19-18. The 49ers scored three of the next four to go ahead again, but a 5-0 run to close out the first on a Long Beach service error, a May solo block, a Harrer kill, a May/Rogers roof and a 49er attack error gave the Bruins a 25-21 victory. Harrer led the Bruins with six kills, with May adding three. The Bruins out-hit the 49ers, .290 to .194.
ย
UCLA never led in set two, dropping the first four points. Three would be the closest the Bruins would be the rest of the way, with eight being the largest margin for Long Beach State, which won by a score of 25-17. May had four kills for UCLA in the second, while Mosser added three to go with four digs. Muno recorded seven digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .342 to .200.
ย
Long Beach (6-5) scored three of the first four of set three, but UCLA responded with the next six. Gates was a part of four of the points on two kills, a solo block and a combo with Chang, with the other two points coming on a Mosser kill and a Long Beach error. UCLA didn't trail for the rest of the set. At 11-10, a 5-1 run on kills by May, Mosser and Harrer and two Long Beach errors gave the Bruins a set-best lead of five at 16-11. The 49ers trailed 23-20 and scored the next three to even things up, but the Bruins got the next two on a Mosser kill and a Long Beach attack error to win the third, 25-23. Gates, May and Mosser each had three kills. Chang posted six digs, while Mosser, Muno and Simo all had four digs. The Bruins out-hit the 49ers, .132 to .122.
ย
The fourth set had nine ties and four lead changes. Trailing 8-5, the Bruins scored six in a row on a May kill, a Rogers/Harrer block and four Long Beach State errors. Even at 15, the Bruins took the lead for good with an 8-3 run, as May took over the match. The sophomore recorded five kills during the run to go with an ace, with Gates adding a kill and the 49ers making an error. Long Beach made things interesting with five of the next six, but an attack error on the Bruins' third match point gave them a 25-23 victory.
ย
The Bruins open up Pac-12 Conference play next Wednesday, Sept. 19 at USC at 8 p.m. The match will be televised on ESPNU and will also have free live audio on UCLABruins.com.
