No. 18 Bruins Fall in Three at No. 2 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Savvy Simo had 13 digs, junior Kylie Miller posted 26 assists and eight digs and sophomore Mac May recorded nine kills and two aces, but the 18th-rankedย Bruins dropped a three-set decision to No. 2 Stanford on Wednesday at Maples Pavilion. Set scores were 18-25, 19-25, 17-25.
Junior Madeleine Gates had seven kills, senior Kyra Rogers added six and senior Zana Munoย notched six digs. The Bruins (6-4, 1-2 Pac-12) hit .121 for the match.
The Bruins scored the first three points of the match on a kill by Rogers, a block from sophomore Jenny Mosserย and a Gates/Mosser combo. UCLA's largest lead of the opening set was four at 8-4. Stanford (11-1, 3-0 Pac-12) would take its first lead at 10-9, and despite four more ties, didn't trail for the rest of the opener. The Cardinal netted nine of the last 11 points to win the first set by a score of 25-18. May led the Bruins with four kills, while Gates was a perfect 3-for-3, as the Bruins were out-hit .378 to .280.
Stanford led wire-to-wire in set two, but the Bruins got some momentum at the end of the second, saving five set points on a Rogers kill and block with redshirtย freshman Alexis Light, two May aces and a Cardinal attack error. Stanford would take the second set on its sixth set point, 25-19, to go up 2-0. May again had four kills, while Rogers added three. Defensively, Simo notched seven digs, Miller had six and Muno added four. The Bruins were out-hit .186 to -.024.
The Bruins used that momentum from the end of the second set to jump out to an 8-3 lead. Mosser recorded two kills during the run and teamed up with Gates on a block, May, Light and Rogers all had kills and Stanford made two errors. UCLA led by four as late as 13-9 before Stanford made its run, scoring the next five and leading for the remainder of the match, eventually taking the third set by a score of 25-17. Gates had three kills in the third, while Simoย posted four digs, as the Bruins were out-hit .405 to .182.
UCLA is back in action on Friday at California at 7 p.m. The match will be televised on Pac-12 Networks Los Angeles and Bay Area.
