BERKELEY, Calif. - The 18th-rankedย Bruins came back from an 0-2 deficit on Friday at Haas Pavilion to defeat California in five sets, as sophomore Mac May had a match-best 20 kills to go with a career-high 14 digs (third double-double) and two aces, while redshirt freshman Alexis Light recorded 19 kills and a .405 hitting percentage. Junior Savvy Simo added 11 digs, sophomore Jenny Mosser had six kills and four digs, senior Kyra Rogers posted four kills and three aces and junior Kylie Miller notched 16 assists and seven digs. The Bruins hit .209 for the match.

The lone lead of the opening set for the Bruins came following a Rogers kill to open the match, with the Golden Bears scoring the next four and not trailing for the rest of the set. California's advantage got up to as much as seven before the Bruins made a run. Down 21-15, five in a row on two May kills, a Miller ace and two Cal errors got UCLA to within one. But the Golden Bears netted four of the next five to win the opener by a score of 25-21. May led the Bruins with four kills in the first, Light added three and Miller and Simo each had four digs, as the Bruins were out-hit .324 to .162.

Set two was a back-and-forth affair early with 10 ties and four lead changes until Cal pulled away. The Bruins' biggest lead of the second was two. Even at 13, the Golden Bears scored 10 of the next 12 to go up by eight, eventually winning the set by a score of 25-19. Gates had four kills in the second, Simo added five digs and Muno posted four digs, as the Bruins were out-hit .351 to .136.

The third set had six ties and four lead changes. The Bruins' largest deficit was just three at 8-5. Down 14-13, the Bruins scored four straight on a Mosser kill, Rogers ace and two Cal errors. UCLA maintained its lead for the rest of the third, as a Gates kill wrapped up the 25-23 win. May posted five kills in the third, Light added four and Gates was a perfect 3-for-3. Muno recorded six digs. The Bruins were out-hit .188 to .171.

UCLA staged a late comeback in set four to keep the match alive. Trailing by as much as six at 16-10, and by as much as three as late as 21-18, UCLA scored the last seven points to get the match to the fifth set. May recorded five consecutive kills to put the Bruins up by a pair, which was followed by two California attack errors to give UCLA the 25-21 win. May was unstoppable in the fourth with eight kills and six digs, while Muno posted 10 digs. Light added five kills and Chang had four digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Bears .316 to .178.

Despite a couple of ties, the Bruins never trailed in the deciding set. Leading 9-8, the Bruins scored four of five on two Light kills, one from Mosser and a Cal attack error. UCLA had two match points thwarted before a Bear error on the third try gave the Bruins a 15-13 victory. Light had five kills and no errors in the sixth, while Muno added four digs, as the Bruins were out-hit .450 to .333.

Next up for the Bruins is their first home match of Pac-12 play, as they host No. 12 Oregon on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The match will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
