BRUINS IN THE POLLS
The Bruins moved up one spot to ninth in this week's AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, earning 1,085 points, 101 more than last week. UCLA is one of eight Pac-12 teams ranked in the Top 25 (No. 4 Stanford, No. 10 USC, No. 12 Washington, No. 18 Oregon, No. 21 Utah, No. 23 Washington State and No. 24 Colorado), with Arizona and Oregon State also receiving votes. In addition, No. 15 Baylor, No. 16 San Diego and No. 22 Cal Poly are also on the Bruins' schedule.
NEWS AND NOTES
Senior Zana Muno has moved into 11th place in UCLA history in digs with 1,170 and will likely get into the Top 10 this weekend. Next up on the list are Kelly Reeves (10th, 1,186) and Jenny Johnson (9th, 1,214) ... the Bruins had 22 blocks in last Sunday's victory at then-No. 19 San Diego, their highest total since Nov. 8, 2007 against Oregon State. This century, UCLA has five matches with at least 20 blocks, with the 22 at USD ranking third on that list ... the Bruins have started a season 4-0 for the third year in a row. UCLA opened 2016 with seven straight victories and 2017 with five in a row.
SCOUTING THE CAL POLY MUSTANGS
Cal Poly comes into this week's matches with a 5-1 record, having won four in a row, including sweeps of Butler, UTRGV and Utah State. The Mustangs also have a four-set victory versus Pepperdine and a five-set triumph against Loyola Marymount, with the only loss coming in four sets at nationally-ranked Pittsburgh. Cal Poly is hitting .272 as a team, averaging 13.05 kills, 1.00 aces, 12.95 digs and 2.14 blocks per set. Junior Torrey Van Winden leads the offensive attack with 4.23 kps, followed by senior Adlee Van Winden, who is posting 2.86 kps. Sophomore Madilyn Mercer, who is third with 2.05 kps, leads the squad with 1.05 bps. Freshman Avalon Denecochea handles the majority of the setting duties, averaging 8.86 assists per set. In the backcourt, senior Katherine Brouker is first with 3.77 dps.
THE SERIES: UCLA VS. CAL POLY
UCLA has won 13 of the 14 meetings all-time against Cal Poly, having claimed the last three matchups. The two teams had not met since 1985 until breaking that drought in the Second Round of last year's NCAA Tournament. The Mustangs won the first set at Pauley Pavilion, but the Bruins claimed the next three to advance to the Regional Semifinals. UCLA is 3-0 all-time in San Luis Obispo, with the last meeting coming on Nov. 2, 1985 (3-1 Bruins).
