SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Sophomore Jenny Mosser posted her fourth double-double in a row with 13 kills and 16 digs, but the ninth-ranked Bruins dropped their first match of the season in a four-set loss at No. 22 Cal Poly on Thursday at Mott Gym. Set scores were 21-25, 25-17, 11-25, 18-25.
Junior Savvy Simo tied a career high with 20 digs and junior Madeleine Gates was also in double figures in kills with 10 to go with a personal-best six digs. Freshman Hawley Harrer had seven kills and two aces, senior Kyra Rogers was error-free with six kills in 12 attempts to go with four blocks and sophomore Mac May added six kills. Senior Zana Muno and junior Kylie Miller each had nine digs, while freshman Sawyer Aigner-Swesey posted six.
The only leads for the Bruins (4-1) in set one were at 1-0 and 2-1. Tied at three, Cal Poly scored six of eight to go ahead by four and maintained its lead for the rest of the opener. The Mustangs' largest lead of the first was six. The Bruins got things down to a pair at 23-21, but Cal Poly (6-1) scored the next two to win the first, 25-21. Mosser paced UCLA with five kills in the opener, while Gates was 4-for-9 with no errors. The Bruins were out-hit .275-.258.
The Bruins led the whole way in set two to even the match. UCLA scored six of the first eight points on two kills by Harrer along with an ace, kills by Gates and Mosser and a Cal Poly attack error. The Mustangs could get no closer than one the rest of the way. At 15-14, five in a row for the Bruins on two Gates kills, one from Harrer and two Cal Poly errors brought the lead up to six at 20-14. The Mustangs scored the next two, but UCLA finished the set with five of the last six, closing the second on a 10-3 run. Kills by Mosser, Gates, redshirt freshman Alexis Light and a Cal Poly attack error gave the Bruins eight set points, with a Gates/Light block wrapping up a 25-17 victory. Gates matched her hitting line from the first set with four kills and no errors in nine swings, while Harrer and Mosser had three kills each. Simo added eight digs and Muno had four. The Bruins out-hit the Mustangs .314 to .100.
Despite three ties in the third set, Cal Poly never trailed to take a 2-1 match advantage. Leading 8-7, the Mustangs scored 17 of the last 21 points to win the third by a score of 25-11. Mosser had six digs, while Simo added four. The Bruins were out-hit .432 to .114.
The Bruins jumped out to a 5-1 lead in set four on a Rogers solo block, kill and ace, a Harrer/Gates stuff and a May kill. Cal Poly responded with five in a row to take the lead, and despite a few more ties, the Bruins couldn't re-take the advantage. Even at seven, a 6-1 run put Cal Poly up by five. The Bruins came back with five in a row on three Mosser kills, a Rogers kill and a Miller ace to even the score at 13. It would be tied again at 14 and 16, but Cal Poly netted nine of the last 12 to win the fourth, 25-19. Harrer, Mosser and Rogers all had three kills. Miller posted seven digs, while Mosser and Simo both had six. The Bruins were out-hit .209 to .080.
