SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - A pair of Bruins posted double-doubles, while four had double figures in kills, but ninth-ranked UCLA dropped a four-set decision at No. 22 Cal Poly on Friday at Mott Gym. Set scores were 25-17, 23-25, 19-25, 23-25.
Sophomore Jenny Mosser recorded her fifth double-double in a row with 14 kills and 11 digs, while freshman Devon Chang posted her third double-double with 47 assists and 13 digs. Junior Savvy Simo set a new career high with 25 digs. Sophomore Mac May had 12 kills, a career-high six blocks and five digs, junior Madeleine Gates tallied 11 kills and no errors in 22 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage to go with five blocks and senior Kyra Rogers added 11 kills and four blocks.
The Bruins led the whole way in the opening set. UCLA scored six of the first eight points on a kill and solo block by Rogers, kills by freshman Hawley Harrer and Gates and two from Mosser. With the score 16-13, the Bruins scored nine of the last 13 to win it 25-17. May had three kills during the 9-4 run and combined on a block with Rogers, who also had a kill. Gates added a solo stuff, the Mustangs served two errors and Mosser ended the set with a kill. Gates, Mosser and Rogers all had four kills in the opening set, while May added three. Mosser also posted five digs, Chang had four to go with her 14 assists and Simo recorded six digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Mustangs .394 to .222.
The Bruins led 5-4 in set two before Cal Poly scored five of the next six to go up 9-6. The Mustangs led for the rest of the set. Cal Poly's largest lead was seven before the Bruins made things interesting. Down 24-18, kills by Gates and Mosser, two Mustang attack errors and an ace by freshman Sawyer Aigner-Swesey saved five set points, but Cal Poly got the next one to win the second, 25-23. Mosser had five kills in the second, Simo posted six digs and Aigner-Swesey had four. The Bruins were out-hit .262 to .175.
The only tie in set three was at 5-all. Cal Poly scored 12 of the next 15 to break it open. The Mustangs' largest lead was 10. The Bruins would get to within five at 24-19 thanks to an 8-3 run, but would lose the third by a tally of 25-19. Gates continued to be error free for the match, adding four kills in the third, as did May, with Rogers notching three. Simo had five digs and Chang had four. The Bruins were out-hit .268 to .235.
The fourth set featured 14 ties and seven lead changes. Down 17-16, the Bruins scored four of five on a May kill and three Cal Poly errors to go ahead 20-18. The back-and-forth continued, as the Mustangs scored the next three, but then UCLA countered with three in a row on a May kill and two straight by Mosser to go ahead 23-21. However, Cal Poly made the final surge with the last four points to win the fourth, 25-23. May and Mosser both had four kills, while Simo added eight digs. The Bruins were out-hit in the fourth, .239 to .200.
The Bruins close out non-conference play on Thursday, Sept. 13 at Long Beach State at 7 p.m. Free live audio will be available at UCLABruins.com.
