UCLA and Cal Battle to 3-3 Deadlock
October 13, 2019 | Men's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's soccer team battled California to a 3-3 tie on Sunday afternoon at Wallis Annenberg Stadium in a Pac-12 showdown.
The Bruins (5-5-1, 1-3-1) led on two separate occasions after goals from Milan Iloski and Matthew Powell, but quickly conceded equalizers to Cal (6-3-2, 2-2-1) both times.
The Golden Bears took their first lead of the game in the 69th minute via a Jonathan Estrada tally, but UCLA rallied for the rest of the regulation and produced the game-tying goal in the 83rd minute.
The two teams would go on to a stalemate the rest of the way.
"We as a staff need to help the team continue to understand how we avoid the moments that concede goals after we're in a position to win," said UCLA head coach Ryan Jorden.
Iloski got the Bruins on the board in the 10th minute with his NCAA-leading 15th goal of the year.
The play was a result of a solid build-up by UCLA, which kicked into high gear when junior right back Ben Reveno played a first-touch pass to Iloski in the offensive third. About 30 yards from goal, Iloski received the pass in stride and took off towards the box. Gaining a step on a pursuer and going wide right of his defender, Iloski blasted a shot inside the far post that beat Cal keeper Drake Callender.

Cal would go on to tie the game less than a minute later, as Alonzo Del Mundo was able to get deep down the left wing and slip a cross into the box, where Paolo Carrillo-Weisenburger smashed it in from close range.
The Bruins responded in the 14th minute thanks to the first goal of the season from senior midfielder/defender Matthew Powell. Sophomore midfielder Riley Ferch found Powell streaking down the left wing, feeding him a pass that led him into a seemingly harmless 1-v-2 situation. Near the end line, Powell made a fake with his left foot then cut back to his right, blasting a sharp-angle shot between the defenders, off the hands of Callender, and into the net.

But once again, the lead was short-lived as Cal would break through in the 23rd minute. Francisco Perez intercepted a pass to start an attack for the Golden Bears, then quickly played a through ball that led Jonathan Estrada into a breakaway where he was able to beat UCLA sophomore keeper Justin Garces.
Callender came up big for Cal in the 57th minute, diving to his left to get his hand on an Iloski penalty kick shot to keep the score tied. That paid off as a dozen minutes later, the Golden Bears sparked a counter-attack that led to a go-ahead goal for Estrada, who finished off a Christian Gomez cross at the far left post.
UCLA battled back to make it a tie game again in the 82nd minute. Freshman left back Constantintos Michaelides whipped in a cross from the left wing, finding junior mid Marcony Pimentel at the far post. A sprinting Pimentel headed it back towards the top of the six-yard box, where Ferch got his head on it and sent it towards senior midfielder Alexis Triadis at the penalty spot. With no defenders around him, Triadis wound up and hit a left-footed volley into the left side of the net for the final score of the contest.

Garces made five saves in the contest, tied for the second most in his career. None of his five stops were bigger than the diving one-handed stop he made on a goal-bound Thomas Williamson one-timer just moments before Triadis's game-tying tally.
Right before that goal, Justin Garces made a heck of a save to keep the scoreline where it was.
