PASADENA, Calif. – UCLA gave up 21 points in the first six minutes and never recovered on Saturday night, dropping a 48-31 decision to Oregon State in a Pac-12 game at the Rose Bowl.
UCLA reduced Oregon State's lead to as few as 10 points in the second half, but could not get any closer.
In his first collegiate start, UCLA quarterback Austin Burton completed 27 of 40 passes for 236 yards. He also had 15 carries for 64 yards. Burton finished the game with one passing touchdown and one rushing score.
Demetric Felton rushed for a career-high 111 yards (on 11 carries), including a 75-yard touchdown run. Joshua Kelley added 74 yards on the ground on 21 rushes.
Oregon State quarterback Jake Luton threw for 285 yards, connecting on 18 of 26 passes. He accounted for six touchdowns – five in the air and one on the ground.
The Beavers (2-3, 1-1 in the Pac-12) grabbed the lead immediately, scoring on the opening drive on a four-yard touchdown pass from Luton to Isaiah Hodgins at the 12:17 mark. On their first possession, the Bruins were stuffed on a fourth-and-one rushing attempt at their 34 yard line, giving the Beavers possession at the UCLA 29. Five plays later, the Beavers were in the end zone again thanks to an Artavis Pierce five-yard touchdown run. The Beavers immediately regained possession thanks to a drop kick by punter Daniel Rodriguez on the ensuing kickoff that Oregon State's David Morris recovered on the UCLA 27. On the first play of the drive, Luton hit Teagan Quitoriano on a 27-yard touchdown completion to give the Beavers a 21-0 lead.
UCLA (1-5, 1-2) got on the board at 10:56 in the second quarter on a nimble touchdown reception by Kyle Philips, who toed the sideline to stay in bounds on a scrambling Burton's seven-yard pass.

The Beavers extended the lead to 27-7 before JJ Molson made the halftime score 27-10 after hitting a 37-yard field goal with 1:40 remaining.
The Bruins took advantage of their first drive of the second half, going 75 yards on 11 plays to trim the lead to 27-17 with 10:13 left in the third quarter. UCLA's touchdown was scored by Kelley, who ran it in from the one-yard line, fumbled but recovered the ball on the goal line. The Bruin defense made quick work of Oregon State on the next drive, forcing a three-and-out and giving the ball back to the UCLA offense, but the Bruins' drive stalled on their 39-yard line when they failed to convert on fourth and four. Oregon State took advantage, scoring on a 53-yard touchdown pass from Luton to Tyjon Lindsey for a 34-17 lead.
On the first play of the next drive, Felton blew through the Beaver defense for a 75-yard touchdown run, the longest run of his career and his fourth 75+-yard touchdown play of the season, making it a 10-point game, 34-24, but Oregon State answered right back with a three-play drive that ended in another Luton touchdown pass, his fifth of the game.

UCLA kept fighting, scoring on its next possession. Three plays after converting a fourth-and-one on the OSU 17, Burton faked to Kelley and took it in himself untouched from six yards out to trim the lead to 41-31 with 8:39 to play. Oregon State, however, returned the favor, also using a fourth-and-one, from the 16, to extend the drive and scored on a Luton 19-yard touchdown run three plays later.
The Bruins will have a bye week next week and will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 17 at Stanford.
