Bruins Drop Season Opener to No. 20 Baylor

LINCOLN, Neb. -ย Senior Savvy Simo was one kill shy of her first career double-double, recording a personal-best nine kills to go with 10 digs on Friday at Devaney Sports Center, as the Bruins dropped their season opener to No. 20 Baylor. Set scores were 25-20, 25-16, 25-20.

Junior Mac May tied Simo with nine kills, adding six digs. Junior Jenny Mosser notched six kills and four digs and sophomore Kelli Barry posted five digs. Sophomore Devon Chang notched 14 assists and three digs, while sophomore Hawley Harrer had 10 assists and two blocks. The Bruins hit .074 for the match.

The opening set was close with nine ties in the first 18 points. Three in a row for the Bruins, ending in an ace by Barry, put UCLA ahead by a set-best three at 12-9. The Bruins' last lead of the first set was at 15-14, as Baylor scored four straight and 11 of the last 16 of the opener to take the set by a score of 25-20. May led the Bruins with five kills, while Barry and Simo both posted three digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .207 to .033.

Baylor never trailed in the second set, winning it 25-16. Trailing 6-1, the Bruins scored seven of 10 on two kills each by Simo and redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith, one apiece from May and Mosser and a Bear attack error to get to within one at 9-8. UCLA would get no closer in the second, as Baylor recorded three in a row and five of the next six. The Bears' largest lead of the set was the same as the winning margin of nine. Simo posted four kills in the second, while Mosser added three. The Bruins were out-hit, .500 to .103.

Simo had four kills and six digs in the third set, while May added three kills and three digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .216 to .083.
