Spitz Tied for First, Bruins Up to Second With 18 Holes Left

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. - Equaling the low round of the day, freshman Emma Spitz is tied for first after 36 holes at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. Spitz shot a 5-under 66 at the Palos Verdes Golf Club on Monday to help the Bruins jump from seventh to second heading into the final day on Tuesday.
As a team, UCLA shot a 5-under 279, 14 shots better than Sunday. The Bruins are at 4-over 572 through two rounds, eight shots back of first-place Duke (-4, 564).
Spitz is at 6-under 136 after two rounds, tied with Auburn's Kaleigh Telfer. After bogeying her first hole, Spitz made six birdies and 11 pars in the final 17 holes, posting three in a row on holes No. 5-7, while adding birdies on No. 9, 14 and 16.
Freshman Emilie Paltrinieri was also under par on Monday, shooting a 2-under 69. She made six birdies, including four in a row on holes No. 11 through 14, adding birdies on No. 7 and 16 to go with four bogeys. Paltrinieri is tied for ninth (E, 142).
Senior Mariel Galdiano is tied for 28th (+4, 146), shooting a 1-over 72. She made three birdies on No. 6, 13 and 16, two bogeys and a double. Freshman Annabel Wilson is tied for 38th (+6, 148), also posting a 1-over 72. She made a birdie on No. 9, two bogeys and 15 pars. Sophomore Phoebe Yue is tied for 61st (+11, 153), making a birdie on No. 17, five bogeys and a double in a 6-over 77. Freshman Yuki Yoshihara, playing as an individual, is 82nd (+18, 160), recording a birdie on the 15th and seven bogeys in a 6-over 77.
Tuesday's final round will be a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. Spitz will start on No. 1, Paltrinieri on No. 2, Galdiano on No. 3, Wilson on No. 4 and Yue on No. 5. Yoshihara will begin her final round on No. 18.
