Bruins Head to the South Bay for Regional Challenge

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Bruins head to the South Bay for the next few days, taking part in the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club. The three-day, 54-hole tournament runs from Sunday through Tuesday at the par-71, 6,017-yard layout.
The starting fivesome for the Bruins will be senior Mariel Galdiano, sophomore Phoebe Yue and freshmen Emilie Paltrinieri, Emma Spitz and Annabel Wilson. The quintet will go off the 10th tee at 9 a.m. on Sunday in their opening round. Freshman Yuki Yoshihara will be playing as an individual, teeing off the first tee on Sunday at 9 a.m.
Joining the Bruins in the stacked 16-team field are No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Arizona State, No. 3 Arizona, No. 4 USC, No. 5 Stanford, No. 6 Kent State, No. 7 Florida, No. 8 Wake Forest, No. 10 Duke, No. 18 Vanderbilt, No. 19 Oregon, No. 24 Auburn, No. 42 Ohio State, No. 47 Pepperdine and Washington.

UCLA had a tuneup at the Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club in Gold Canyon, Ariz. on Jan. 26, as Arizona State (287) won by one shot over the Bruins and Denver (288). Senior Clare Legaspi shot a 2-under 70 and Spitz posted a 1-under 71 to finish tied for second and fourth, respectively. In the fall season, the Bruins were second at the Nanea Pac-12 Preview, third at the Golfweek Conference Challenge, seventh at the Stanford Intercollegiate and 10th at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate.
Spitz was the top finisher at each of the Bruins' first three tournaments, sharing the top spot with freshman Ty Akabane at Stanford. Galdiano shared the low Bruin honors with Akabane at Nanea. Spitz has finished under par in each of her last three full-field events, placing third at Golfweek (-8, 208), tied for seventh at Nanea (-4, 215) and tied for 11th at Stanford (-1, 212).
Galdiano was under par in all three rounds at Nanea, finishing at 7-under 212 to tie for second. Wilson notched a pair of 2-under 70s at the Golfweek Conference Challenge to tie for 16th. Paltrinieri posted a 2-under 70 in the final round of the GCC to tie for 18th, as did Yoshihara. Yue will be competing in her first full-field tournament of the 2019-2020 season.
