Spitz Rallies for First Collegiate Victory

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Freshman Emma Spitz shot a 3-under 69 on Tuesday at the San Luis Obispo Country Club to make up a six-shot deficit and share medalist honors at the Bruin Wave Invitational.
Spitz (-5, 211) made birdies on No. 1, 10 and 11, one bogey and 13 pars to close to within one shot of Northwestern's Kelly Sim heading to the 18th hole. Spitz's second shot into the par 4 landed about seven feet from the hole, and while Sim made par, the UCLA freshman drained her birdie putt to tie for first and record the first victory of her career.
As a team, the Bruins finished solo second (+16, 880), shooting a 4-over 292 on Tuesday to place two strokes back of USC (+14, 878).
Freshman Emilie Paltrinieri also closed with a 3-under 69 to finish in solo third (-2, 214). She eagled the par-5 10th hole, adding birdies on No. 7, 9 and 13 and two bogeys.
Freshman Annabel Wilson, playing as an individual, was solo seventh (+4, 220). She shot a 3-over 75 on one birdie on the eighth, two bogeys and a double. Senior Clare Legaspi tied for 28th (+13, 229), recording a 4-over 76 in her final round on two birdies on No. 7 and 15 and six bogeys. Senior Mariel Galdiano tied for 35th (+16, 232), shooting a 6-over 78. She eagled the par-5 7th to go with six bogeys and a double. Freshman Yuki Yoshihara, playing as an individual, tied for 41st (+19, 235). She made back-to-back birdies on No. 10 and 11 and six bogeys in a 4-over 76. Sophomore Phoebe Yue also tied for 41st, shooting a 7-over 79 on two birdies (No. 7 and 16), seven bogeys and a double.
Next up for the Bruins is the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate (March 6-8) at the Long Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
