HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - Battling through windy conditions during the first round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, the Bruins persevered to an 8-over 292 to sit in second place after 18 holes at the Long Cove Club. UCLA is five shots back of first-place Wake Forest (+3, 287).
Freshmen Emilie Paltrinieri and Emma Spitz are both tied for third after even-par 71s. Paltrinieri made four birdies, including three in her first five holes (No. 1, 2 and 5), adding another on the 18th to go with four bogeys.
Spitz posted three birdies on No. 1, 5 and 18 and three bogeys. The Bruin duo are two shots back of the individual lead held by Wake Forest's Rachel Kuehn (-2, 69). Senior Mariel Galdiano and freshman Annabel Wilson are tied for 33rd (+4, 75). Wilson made back-to-back birdies on No. 5 and 6, four bogeys and a double, while Galdiano notched a birdie on the eighth and five bogeys. Senior Clare Legaspi is tied for 42nd (+5, 76), recording three birdies on No. 6, 9 and 10, four bogeys and two doubles.
Round two for the Bruins on Saturday starts at 10:10 a.m. ET/7:10 a.m. PT off the first tee in the order of Legaspi, Galdiano, Wilson, Paltrinieri and Spitz.
