No. 8 Softball Takes Down Huskies, 7-2, to Clinch Series

LOS ANGELES โ The No. 8-ranked UCLA softball team defeated Washington, 7-2, in front of a sold-out Easton Stadium crowd Saturday evening to clinch the series and extend its winning streak to 11 games.

Junior Jordan Woolery and Megan Grant both homered in the first inning to give the Bruins (39-5, 10-1 Big Ten) and early 4-0 lead. Junior right-hander Taylor Tinsley started in the circle and recorded her second straight complete-game victory.

Tinsley struck out 11 Huskies (29-11, 7-4 Big Ten) en route to picking up her 10th win of the year. The performance marked Tinsley's eighth double-digit strikeout game of her career. She allowed just one baserunner (hit) through her first four innings and put forth a dominant stretch with 11 straight batters retired. Each of the first five outs Tinsley recorded came by way of strikeout.

Similar to game one, UCLA's No. 1 and 2 hitters Jessica Clements and Savannah Pola opened the bottom of the first with a base hit and walk to set the table for the slugging duo of Woolery and Grant. Woolery, who was walked twice in the series opener Friday night, finally got her pitch to hit on a 2-2 count and crushed a three-run homer to left-center. Woolery shouted for joy just a few steps into her 18th home run trot of the year.

One pitch later, Grant rocketed her NCAA-leading 21st home run of the season into the right field trees. Grant has now homered in three straight games with 10 runs batted in across that stretch.

The Bruins added two more runs off three hits in the bottom of the third. Grant pulled a groundball through the 4-3 hole to start the rally and a double by freshman Kaniya Bragg to center field put two in scoring position. The next batter, freshman Rylee Slimp, drove in the pair with a double of her own to left field. Bragg sprinted around third and dove head first into home to beat the tag at the plate by a second and push the lead to 6-0.

Senior second baseman Savannah Pola added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth on a single through the right side for her first hit and RBI of the ballgame.

Washington finally broke through against Tinsley the next half inning. Center fielder Sophi Mazzola hit a two-run shot that just passed the left field fence to bring the score to its final tally at 7-2.
