Top-Ranked Bruins Close Fall Slate in Cabo

SAN JOSE DEL CABO, Mexico - The top-ranked Bruins finish up their fall campaign south of the border this weekend at the inaugural Battle at the Beach at Club Campestre San Jose. The 54-hole, three-day tournament will be played Friday through Sunday on the par-71, 6,209-yard layout.

The starting fivesome for UCLA will be juniors Lilia Vu and Beth Wu, sophomores Mariel Galdiano and Clare Legaspi and freshman Patty Tavatanakit. In addition, freshman Vera Markevich will be competing as an individual. Action each day will be a shotgun start (8:30 a.m. for rounds one and two, 8 a.m. for final round). The Bruins will begin on holes #1-#4 on Friday in the order of Vu, Tavatanakit, Wu, Legaspi and Galdiano, while Markevich will open her first round on #17. Live scoring will be available here.

Joining the Bruins and host Baylor in the 15-team field are #13 Texas, #20 Wake Forest, #21 Virginia, #22 Houston, #24 North Carolina, #25 Vanderbilt, #31 Oklahoma, #36 Ohio State, #38 Auburn, Mississippi State, North Texas, TCU and Tulane (Golfstat rankings as of Oct. 31).

The Bruins have won their last two tournaments at the Stanford Intercollegiate (-3, 849, Oct. 16-18) and the rain-shortened Nanea Pac-12 Preview (-20, 564, Oct. 23-24), while finishing second at the season-opening ANNIKA Intercollegiate (-4, 860, Oct. 1-3), recording a combined score of 27-under with five out of eight under-par team rounds.

Tavatanakit is coming off an outstanding first month of her collegiate career, tying for first at Stanford (-6, 207), finishing solo second at the ANNIKA (-5, 211) and placing third at Nanea (-5, 141). Of her eight rounds, seven have been under par (combined -16), with her other round being an even par to open Nanea. Tavatanakit has three rounds in the 60s, finishing the Stanford Intercollegiate with a 4-under 67, posting a 5-under 68 in round two at Nanea and a 3-under 69 in the second round at the ANNIKA.

Vu has a pair of Top 6 showings in her two events, finishing solo second at the Nanea Pac-12 Preview (-7, 139) and tied for sixth at the Stanford Intercollegiate (E, 213). She was under par in both rounds at Nanea with an opening-round 67 (-6) and a second-round 72 (-1), while adding a pair of 1-under 70s to conclude her tournament at Stanford.

Wu is also coming off back-to-back, Top 6 efforts, placing fourth at Nanea (-4, 142) and T-6 at Stanford (E, 213). She fired a 5-under 68 to wrap up her tournament in Hawai'i, also posting three other under-par rounds. She had a 1-under 70 to close the Stanford Intercollegiate and consecutive 1-under 71s at the season-opening ANNIKA Intercollegiate, where she tied for 16th (+1, 217).

Galdiano has placed inside the Top 11 in all three tournaments, tying for fifth at Nanea (-2, 144), finishing 11th at Stanford (+3, 216) and tying for 11th at the ANNIKA (-1, 215). She has five under-par rounds, including a pair in the 60s, recording a 3-under 69 to end the ANNIKA and a 3-under 68 to close the Stanford Intercollegiate. Galdiano was also under par in both rounds at Nanea (-1, 72) and the second round at the ANNIKA (-2, 70).

Legaspi tied for 11th at Nanea (+1, 147), tied for 16th at the ANNIKA (+1, 217) and tied for 39th at Stanford (+13, 226). She has a pair of under-par rounds, posting a 2-under 70 in round two at the ANNIKA and a 1-under 72 in the opening round at Nanea.

Markevich will be making her collegiate debut in Cabo. The freshman from Moscow, Russia attended Xavier College Preparatory HS in Palm Desert, Calif., where she won the individual Desert Valley League Championship in back-to-back years, as well as a sixth-place finish in the CIF Championship.
