SAN JOSE DEL CABO, Mexico - The top-ranked Bruins are in second place, one shot back, after 18 holes at the Battle at the Beach at Club Campestre San Jose. UCLA shot a 2-under 282 as a team on Friday and is one behind first-place Oklahoma (-3, 281) and one of just three times who are under par after day one (Houston, -1, 283).

Junior Lilia Vu and sophomore Clare Legaspi are each tied for fifth after 2-under 69s in round one. Vu parred her first nine holes before making a birdie on #10. Following a bogey on #11 and a par on #12, she made back-to-back birdies on #13 and #14, ending her round with four consecutive pars.

Legaspi is tied for the field lead with six birdies. She bounced back from a double bogey on her first hole (#4) to make birdie on #7. Following a bogey on #11, Legaspi made three birdies in a row on holes #14-#16 and then added another one on #18. She had a birdie (#2), bogey (#1) and par (#3) on her final three holes to complete her 69.

Junior Beth Wu and freshman Patty Tavatanakit are both tied for 20th, posting 1-over 72s. Starting on the third, Wu parred her first 10 holes before making a birdie on #13. She would also birdie her last hole, the second, to go with three bogeys. Tavatanakit notched three birdies on #3, #4 and #17, adding a pair of doubles. Sophomore Mariel Galdiano is tied for 30th (+2, 73), tallying a birdie on her first hole (#5), as well as #7 and #14, three bogeys and one double. Freshman Vera Markevich, playing as an individual, had a birdie on #5, seven bogeys, two doubles and a triple in her first collegiate round and is tied for 81st (+13, 84).

It will be another shotgun start on Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on holes #1-#4 in the order of Vu, Legaspi, Tavatanakit, Wu and Galdiano, with Markevich starting on #18. Live scoring will be available here.
