SEATTLE, Wash. -
The 13th-ranked Bruins outlasted #8 Washington on Saturday by a score of 9-8 to clinch the Pac-12 series at Husky Softball Stadium. Sophomore Paige Halstead had three hits and three RBI, junior Kylee Perez and freshman Bubba Nickles each posted two hits and redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia homered and earned the win in relief.

The Bruins improved to 26-8 overall and 2-3 in Pac-12 play, while the Huskies fell to 26-8 and 3-5 in league action.

All nine UCLA starters had at least one hit, while five drove in runs. In the circle, Garcia got the final four outs to improve to 10-4 on the season. She struck out two and gave up three hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Junior Johanna Grauer started and struck out one in 3 1/3 innings, giving up a run, four hits and three walks. Junior Selina Ta'amilo fanned three in 2 1/3 frames of relief, allowing three hits, seven runs and four walks.

Despite the final score, the first two innings were quick and scoreless, until the Bruins crossed the plate four times in the third. Nickles led off with a double to left, moved to third on a grounder by sophomore Zoe Shaw and scored on a Perez single to center to put the visitors on the board. A double by senior Delaney Spaulding put a pair on base, which was followed by a grounder to third off the bat of sophomore Brianna Tautalafua, which was bobbled by the Huskies, as Perez scored UCLA's second run. One out later, Halstead singled just past the second baseman to plate Spaulding and Tautalafua to make it 4-0.

The Bruins tacked on two more runs in the fifth, as Tautalafua led off the inning with a homer to right-center, her team-best 10th of the season, and Garcia launched a two-out homer to left-center, her third of the year and second in as many nights, to increase the lead to 6-0.

The Huskies stormed back with four in their half of the fifth on an RBI single by Kaija Gibson and a three-run homer by Taylor Van Zee to get to within two, but the Bruins added three in the sixth to go back up by five. Shaw and Perez led off the inning with singles, which was followed by a hit by pitch of Spaulding to load the bases. One out later, junior Madeline Jelenicki doubled to left to bring in Shaw and Perez to make it 8-4. Halstead then singled to center to plate Spaulding with the Bruins' ninth run.

It would prove to be an important run for the Bruins, as the Huskies scored four in the sixth on a two-run single by Morganne Flores and RBI singles from Van Zee and Kirstyn Thomas to get to within one. Washington would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Garcia retired Flores on a fly out to center to end the game.

The Bruins look for the sweep on Sunday, playing the Huskies at 5 p.m. in a game which will air on Pac-12 Network National and Los Angeles.
